With sadness, we announce our friend, Stephen L. Smith, 65, of Williamsburg, passed away at home on Wednesday, April 2, 2025. Born on September 28, 1959 in Newport News, Virginia, he grew up in the Denbigh area. He was a long-time resident of Williamsburg.
“Steve” graduated from Denbigh High School and later attended Old Dominion University in the Land Surveying Certificate Program. Immediately following graduation, he enlisted and served his country in the Army, stationed in Texas.
Upon return from the Army, he embarked on a thirty-five year career in land surveying. His earliest jobs were with construction companies on the layout crew, working on numerous infrastructure projects in Hampton Roads including bridges, roadways, water and sewer lines, and drainage systems. He was employed with Tidewater Construction Corp. during the Coleman Bridge re-construction as a field engineer, and saw the project completed from start to finish. Later he worked for various engineering firms in Williamsburg and was associated with commercial development, boundary surveys, numerous new subdivisions, environmental studies, continued layout of infrastructure, and stakeout of large commercial and military buildings. His legacy projects include the Transportation Inn (now General Smalls Inn), Fort Eustis, VA, Smithfield Foods Administration building, Smithfield, VA, and The Desert Wind Farm (Amazon), near Elizabeth City, NC. Additionally, Steve worked many years as a weekend production worker for Anheuser-Busch, Williamsburg.
Steve will be remembered for his cherished friendships, his love of music, and organizing gatherings at his home and on the river. He was a kind man that offered help to those that needed it. When his children were young, he especially enjoyed taking them on activities such as camping, fishing, ball games and NASCAR races. In his later years, Steve's favorite pastime was cruising the James with friends, fishing near the Ghost Fleet, cookouts, and spending time at Jamestown Beach and the Jamestown Yacht Basin.
Steven was preceded in death by his parents, David L. and Patricia L. Smith, Newport News, VA, and close friends Owen Hudson and Charlie H. He is survived by his children, Jeremy “JD” Adams and his children, Robert, Madison, Emma, Jace, and Lainey, all of Urbanna, VA, Christina Hogge, husband Joe and children Jaydon and Bryson, Locust Hill, VA; brother, Kenneth Smith and sister, Susan Brehm. He is also survived by special friends, John Hula, David Spring, Ernest Swann, Rhonda C. Scott, David Walkley, Ricky Rangel, Shawn DeLong, and his beautiful cat 'Moses.'
