

Stuart Gerald Smith, 68, passed away on June 2nd at the Hospice House of Williamsburg after a lengthy illness. A native Virginian, he was born and raised in Newport News and relocated to Williamsburg in 1985, where he worked for the City of Williamsburg for 19 years as Assistant to the City Manager and as a Purchasing Agent, retiring July of 2005. Additionally, he worked for the Peninsula Planning District Commission after graduation from college and worked for Ferguson Enterprises for five years after retirement. He graduated from Warwick High School in 1967, graduated from East Carolina University in 1973 with a degree in Urban Planning and Geography, and a master's degree from Old Dominion University in Public Administration. Stuart served in the Army Reserves from 1969-1975.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Richard B. and Angela Ayers Smith, an infant sister, Susan, and his grandparents. Stuart is survived by his wife of 45 years, Sharon Bland Smith; his daughter Jennifer and son-in-law Eric Leichter, their sons Logan and Lucas; and son Matthew and daughter-in-law Shelley, their son Colin. He was devoted to his wife, immediate family, extended family, and family pets — Callie, Sweet Pea and Brandi. He loved playing golf, puttering all day long in the yard and riding in their golf cart in the neighborhood. Stuart and his wife Sharon are members of Stone House Presbyterian Church.
There will be a celebration of life memorial service for Stuart on Tuesday, June 6, at Stone House Presbyterian Church in Toano, Virginia at 3:30 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Hospice House of Williamsburg or Stone House Presbyterian Church.
