A funeral service will be held Monday, January 19 at 11:00 a.m. at WindsorMeade in Williamsburg, led by his son, the Reverend T. Camper Mundy, Jr., with a musical offering by his son Matthew O’Neil Mundy.
Tom was born June 6, 1941 in Raleigh, NC to Ruby Camper Mundy and Loyd Thomas Mundy. After graduating from Needham Broughton High School (Raleigh), he attended Wake Forest University in Winston-Salem as a member of the ROTC program and graduated in 1963 with a degree in Business Management. He met Alice Ann Edwards, of Winston-Salem, following his junior year. Tom and Alice Ann married a year later.
After graduation, Tom was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in the U.S. Army and completed two years of service, attaining the rank of First Lieutenant. Tom and Alice Ann then moved to Gainesville, GA where he worked for First National Bank. During his banking employment, Tom earned a Master of Business Administration from Georgia State University in Atlanta. Soon after, he bought a small local mattress business (Gainesville Mattress Company), which he renamed American Bedding Company and expanded into a supplier of bedding throughout the Southeast.
Tom loved the Lord Jesus and was committed to growing in his faith. After settling in Gainesville, he and Alice Ann joined Grace Episcopal Church, where he served on the church vestry for many years. Tom was a member of the Gainesville Jaycees, and later the Gainesville Rotary Club. He was a strong supporter of the Boys & Girls Clubs in Gainesville and of St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital in Memphis.
Tom and Alice Ann found much joy in their lives, which included many friends. Each Labor Day Weekend, they made an annual trip with friends to Highlands, NC to hike, shop, and simply enjoy close friendships. The small group called themselves “The Bridge Group that Didn’t Play Bridge!”
Tom had a deep appreciation for fine wine and studied it attentively, finding particular joy in sharing it with friends and family. Tom and Alice Ann traveled to vineyards in Napa, France, Italy, and Western Canada for tastings and to learn about the craft of winemaking.
Tom was a loving “Gumda” to his three grandchildren. He and Alice Ann loved spending time with their family (especially their grandkids!), often hosting everyone at spring break and during the summer in Myrtle Beach, SC, until travel became too challenging due to Tom’s health.
After Tom was diagnosed with ALS, they moved near their oldest son in Williamsburg, VA. As his disease progressed, Tom was cared for so well by the caregivers of Bayada Home Health and the nursing staff of Gentiva Hospice Care.
Tom is survived by his loving wife of 62 years, Alice Ann Edwards Mundy; two sons: Matthew Mundy, and Camper Mundy and his wife, Heather; three grandchildren: Hope, Ty, and Mercy; three nieces: Joyce Wilson, Debbie Allison, and Teresa Brewer; two nephews: Rick Carter and Shawn Carter.
Tom's body will be laid to rest in the family cemetery in Buchanan, VA. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, P.O. Box 1999, Memphis, TN 38101.
