Werner Weingartner, 86, of Williamsburg, passed away September 10, 2022. He was unique, unforgettable. Anyone who had ever met him would tell you that he was someone who was one of a kind. He never tried to impress someone about who he was. Werner always spoke his mind, most often uncensored and with complete honesty. He never wanted to hurt anyone’s feelings but never flinched in telling the truth as he saw it. He always marched to his own drummer, was spontaneous, caring, loving, loyal, genuine. His fundamental goodness was sometimes missed by those who focused on his idiosyncrasies. He adored his wife Mary Anne Cody. He loved with a passion his family (brother, nephews, and their children) and friends.
Werner was born in Flehingen, Germany and escaped the holocaust at the last moment (1939). He studied mathematics and became an amazing mathematics teacher attested by his many students even years later. He could teach complex math to a rock. Werner was a master chess and bridge player. His interest in promoting world peace prompted him to fund a program at William and Mary to promote a curriculum and programs to that aim. Werner has left his mark on the world he has left behind. He will be missed but always remembered as one of a kind. I wish he could have been here to appreciate how so many cared for and valued who he was.
