Born on June 1, 1963, Wes grew up in Wrentham, MA, where he played and worked on his grandparents’ farm and enjoyed the summers with frequent camping and fishing trips to the tip of Cape Cod.
He attended King Philip High School in Wrentham, where he starred in track and field. Following high school, he went on to a career as a licensed electrician and then met Mary, who became his wife of 37 years. Due to epilepsy, Wes had to pivot to a different career choice and relied on his electrical background and knowledge of the trades to work retail sales in the home improvement industry. Supportive of his wife’s career in public service, the two left Massachusetts for Colorado and then Falls Church, VA, which they called home for 30 years, before retiring to Williamsburg.
The true apple of his eye was his daughter, Meaghan. When she arrived, he became a very devoted and proud stay-at-home dad and always referred to her as his “little buddy”. Wes was patient, creative, and artistic and loved to spend hours with his little buddy drawing, painting, putting together Thomas the Tank Engine train sets, creating costumes, playing games, going on adventures in the nearby woods, and spending summer days at Woodley Pool. The two were inseparable. However, he wasn’t popular with just Meaghan. All the kids in their quaint townhome community loved “Mr. Wes”. He was truly the most popular guy around. The children’s activities and parties he planned and hosted, to include designing and building the props, are still legendary among the neighborhood children who are now young adults. His experiences as a stay-at-home dad influenced his decision later in life to pursue an associate degree and position as a teaching assistant.
Wes is preceded in death by his parents, Harold and Helen (White) Wheeler. In addition to his wife and daughter, he is survived by his brother David (Holly) Wheeler and nephew, Jared Wheeler.
