With deepest sorrow, we announce that William David Altman III, age 43, passed away on Tuesday, May 4, 2021.

The world will never be the same without Davy, our most beloved son, brother, uncle, and friend. Those who knew Davy, even just a little, have lost a shining light in their lives.

As a boy, he spent his days in Boy Scouts, achieving the rank of Eagle. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, and cherishing the time he had with his beautiful black lab, Lucky. He often expressed being grateful for the relationships he had with his sister and brother, taking great pride in the closeness they all three shared.

Dave graduated from Lafayette High School in 1996. He then acquired his Associate's degree in Criminal Justice from Thomas Nelson Community College. His pursuit of a career in law-enforcement started at age 21, with the Newport News Police Department. Dave's straightforward, plain speaking demeanor quickly earned him the respect of his peers. He retired as a Sergeant in 2018, spending his last 8 years as Commander of Homicide.

He was proud to be part of an amazing brotherhood of men, they were his best friends and confidants, some dating back to his early childhood days in Boy Scouts and continuing through his time at the Newport News Police Department. Friendships were formed that turned into family, with constant unwavering support for each other.

Dave is survived by his parents, Dave & Apryl Altman of Williamsburg VA; sister, Christine Altman Mardini (Mo) of Tracy, California; brother, Kevin Altman (Jena) of Williamsburg, VA; niece, Vanessa; nephews, Carter and Keller; as well as a large extended family, who loved him dearly.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Davy’s name, to the American Heart Association, PO Box 840692, Dallas, TX 75284-0692 (www.heart.org) or the MCV Foundation, 1228 East Broad St., Box 980234, Richmond, VA 23298 (www.mcvfoundation.org) in appreciation of the doctors and nurses that have cared for Davy over the past 43 years.

He bravely and humbly fought the good fight, and now peacefully rests, ending this tour of duty. 10-42.

One night, Dave called me. It was a week night @ 11pm. He said lets go riding. I said "when?" He said now. I was in my bedroom, wife in bed and I was getting in to bed. I said "Dave. I'm getting in bed". He said "No man, let's go". This went back and fourth a few time's until I said "OK. Screw it. I'm on my way". Just he and I, riding thru Charles City and Prince George. Didn't get home til 3. One of the best nights ever.

Dave was a man you could count on to drop what he was doing and come help you. I'll always remember the times the sarge would cut him loose early. He'd be waiting in the parking lot at knock off with a cooler of beer for all of us. When he lived on Harpersville Road, he'd be on his porch at 1am and I'd be on my way home and stop, knowing I'd be there several hours.

And no one could BBQ ribs like Dave. He showed the same care in everything he did from criminal investigations to helping with home projects. Even with his stubby fingers (we jokingly called him "Little digits") he was a true craftsman.

One of my friends said it best about Dave's passing..."I wish I knew half the stuff that Dave knew". I'll miss you buddy.

Dave and I shared employment with the Newport News PD where he rose in rank to oversee the Homicide Unit. Well respected by his peers, Dave was equally well thought of by the public that he served during his career with the department. We pass through life meeting many, most of whom gradually retire from our memories. But there are a select few who remain in the minds eye over time returning vividly by a reminder. Dave Altman will be one of these.

Our thoughts and prayers to the Altman family.

I am so saddened by this loss, and my deepest condolences to the Altman family. I regret to say that I had not been in touch with Davey for some time, but he was one of my partners in crime in Boy Scouts and I have great memories of our times on numerous campouts. Much love to you all.

My dear Dave & Apryl: where do I begin? I know your hearts are full of pain and loss right now. Please remember that you two gave him such a good qualify of life during his illness. I remember Davy as the blonde headed boy and teenager. I also remember how he "looked out for me" after Dan's passing. I remember the bond that Dan and Davey had and how he loved to hunt with him. I always felt like family when I was with your family. So Davy's passing is like loosing a family member to me--even though we had lost touch for many year. The feelings never go away. As time passes, I hope that you can look at all those wonderful photos and remember that Davy lived a great and full life. The picture you used is fabulous. You can see what a loving person he was. My heart is full of sorrow for you and your family. I love you all.

I couldn't believe the news when my parents told me about Davy's passing today. I'll always consider him being my first best friend from the days of Olde Town Road and when you all moved to Ford's Colony. The days of swimming at Season's Trace. All the great times that make life what it is. I still vividly remembering venturing down into the swamps behind your house at Ford's Colony. If Davy only knew how scared I was of snakes, mud, and the unknown, perhaps he would have stopped me, but I would now regret how much fun we had just exploring nature and hanging out. I haven't seen Davy in 30+ years, but it was always good to hear the snippets of how he was doing in life, the impact he was making, and I'm just really sad today knowing that a really good person in my life has moved on. He was - and is - a very special person, so my thoughts are with you all. Take care and I'll do all I can to forever to keep him with me.
