William Eugene Chatfield

William Eugene Chatfield age 80 passed away January 11, 2020 at Williamsburg Landing Health and Rehabilitation Center in Williamsburg, VA. He was preceded in death by his parents Alonzo B. Chatfield Jr. and Ruth Davis Chatfield, his brothers Alonzo B. Chatfield III, Robert G. Chatfield, Raymond P. Chatfield, and brother-in-law Wallace E. Acton. He is survived by his loving wife of 60 years Luella Acton Chatfield, brother-in-law John H. Acton, children Greg (Carol) Chatfield, Cheryl (Mike) Kos, grandchildren Thomas Chatfield, Brittany (Joe) Constantine, Courtney (Mike) Kopacz, Jordan & Melanie Kos, his great-grandson Liam Constantine and numerous nieces & nephews. Born in Washington, DC on February 21, 1939, his first job was a paperboy and he used his first paycheck to buy an accordion and pay for lessons. After graduating from Woodrow Wilson High School he started working at Riggs National Bank and taking night classes at Benjamin Franklin University where he graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Accounting. In 1970 he founded Suburban Planning Corporation later known as SPC Financial. Recognizing the complexity in an evolving financial world, he dedicated himself in 1977 to becoming one of the first CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER™ professionals in the Washington, DC area. Bill not only used his knowledge of finance to help individuals, but he devoted countless hours to his local churches and the Wesley Theological Seminary offering his knowledge and financial guidance. While he remained active with his local church & Wesley, Bill retired from working in 2000 to hone his skills at one of his other passions which was golf. While he never got the elusive hole in one he enjoyed his time on the links with friends and family and spawned a passion in his grandson Thomas that continues to lead him to new heights. Bill was also a diehard Washington Redskin fan, a passion shared by his brother Ray and instilled in his children by taking them to games when they were young. A highlight of his later years was fulfilling a childhood dream of his beloved wife by visiting all 50 states. In the end what mattered most to Bill was his family and his faith. A celebration of life will be held at Williamsburg United Methodist Church on Saturday February 8th at 2:00 p.m. A reception will immediately follow the service. In lieu of flowers the family requests contributions be made to the Williamsburg UMC Endowment Fund, 500 Jamestown Road, Williamsburg, VA 23185.
