William was born in Boston, MA in 1932 and graduated from Melrose High School in 1950. He was a polio survivor from the epidemic of the 1930’s. After graduating, he enjoyed a long career in the newspaper business until his retirement in 1998. During this career, he was an Advertising Director for five different newspapers and Northeast Director of Multi-Ad Services out of Peoria. He was awarded a lifetime membership to the New England Advertising Executive Association, part of the New England Press Association, upon his retirement.
In his youth, Bill was an Assistant Scout Master in the BSA and enjoyed his years in the Order of the DeMolay where he achieved the position of Master Councilor of the Melrose Chapter. After his marriage, he and his family were long time residents of Chelmsford where he was the Parks and Recreation Commissioner, coached Little League baseball, began a Cub Scout and Boy Scout troop, and was a charter member of the Chelmsford Minutemen, in which he played the fife. Some treasured memories as a Minuteman were participating in the nation’s Bicentennial celebrations in 1976 and re-enacting the Battle of Bennington with his sons, the Battle of Lexington and Concord, and the Benedict Arnold Expedition to Quebec City. Most importantly, Mr. Dempster gratefully served his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, in several churches where he was a deacon and trustee.
Bill is survived by his beloved - his devoted and loving wife Audrey (Kerr) Dempster, and his three children: William III (Dee) of NH, Wayne (Maureen) of VA, and Linda Reed of VA. Additionally, he is survived by his brother Robert (Claudia) of CA, sister Marilyn (Mike) Madore of ME, granddaughter Sara (Andy) Wolff of ME, and two grandsons: Ian Dempster of NH and Chase Reed of VA, along with several nieces, nephews, and cousins.
A Memorial Service will be held Saturday, February 24 at 11:00 at Nelsen Funeral Home in Williamsburg. William requests in lieu of flowers a contribution be made in his memory to the Hospice House, 4445 Powhatan Parkway, Williamsburg, VA 23188. Condolences may be shared at www.nelsenwilliamsburg.com.
