William “Bill” C. Salyer, Jr, 82, a lifelong resident of Williamsburg/James City County, died on February 26, 2023 with his family by his side. He was the son of the late William C., Sr, and Greta B. Salyer.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Debbie; his daughter, Greta; stepson, Keith; brother, Sherry; and nephew, Randy.
Bill spent 39 years as a Scientific/Technical Photographer for NASA - Langley. At the time of his retirement, he was the Section Head of the Photo Lab. He was known as “Sal” at work. Sal and his co-workers were a family and they were involved in numerous incredible projects over those 39 years, going back to the early days of the space program.
He was a founding member of the William & Mary Quarterback Club and remained an active member. Bill loved his family, but a very close second was Tribe Football. Even with his many health challenges, getting to W&M football games was a top priority. Bill loved spending time in his garden, eating out with his many friends but most of all, “Poppop” loved spending time with his grandchildren. Bill never met a stranger and if you were ever in line behind him at the grocery store, you already know this.
He is survived by his daughter, Ruth Ann Larson & husband, Craig. His sister, Diane Thompson & husband, John. Sister-in-law, Bibby Salyer. Grandchildren, Rob (Elli), Caroline and Abby Larson, Massie Stevens (Brittany), Madison Kersey; and great grandson, Parker Stevens. Along with Brian Moore and T. Salyer; and his nieces and nephews: Bev, Sissy, Johnny, Tommy, Scotty and their families.
The family wishes to thank his caregivers from Agape that allowed him to remain in his home as long as possible, and the loving Staff at Edgeworth Park for the kindness shown to him for the past six months.
A service will be held at 3:00pm on Saturday, March 4, 2023 at Nelsen Funeral Home, 3785 Strawberry Plains Rd, Williamsburg, VA 23188.
