Born in Detroit September 7, 1922 to John and Zilda Miner, Betty met her love, Keith, at McKenzie High School. They were married June 19, 1943. Keith graduated from Michigan State University on the G.I. Bill and became an urban planner (later an MSU professor). They lived in Williamston, Pontiac, Toledo and Grand Rapids, returning to Williamston in 1960.
Her older brother Melvin, twin brother Russell, cousin Clifford, sister-in-law Barbara and nephew Geoffrey precede her in death. Betty delighted in life and fearlessly battled injustice. A devoted mother and homemaker, she hated war and passionately supported equal rights for all through the Democratic Party, Unitarian Church,Women’s International League for Peace and Freedom, and nursing home reform. Betty supported Williamston civic issues, public education, restoration of the train depot, and owned a doll repair shop. She loved town parades, beautiful music, reading newspapers, long chats over coffee, her antique doll collection, flower garden and, above all, her family.
Betty had a huge heart and loved people. She is survived by her husband of 68 years, Keith, children Maureen (Tom Kiefer), Michael (Patti Krueger), and Charles (Andrea Myers); grandchildren Emily (Nicole Hamilton-Honey), Maxwell, and their mother Wendy Honey; first cousins Lucille Bauer, Kathleen Gabler, Charles Miner; 43 nieces and nephews; two foster children, Barry McGuire and Marguerite Bryant; and close friends Mary and John Read.
A memorial service will be held at noon on Saturday, August 6, at Williamston United Methodist Church, 211 S. Putnam, Williamston. Donations can be made to Jonah House, a non-profit, non-violent peace and social justice community, through Sister Mary Miner, 1301 Moreland Ave, Baltimore, MD 21216.
The family is being served by Gorsline Runciman Funeral Homes, Williamston. On line condolences may be made at www.gorslineruncimanwilliamston.com.
