He is survived by his children, Michael Metzger (Tina), Deborah Metzger, Scott Metzger (Jennifer) and Kathy Metzger; his siblings, Bill Metzger (Judy), Carol Pedersen, Virginia Benyon (Jim) and Joyce Gudding; as well as many nieces, nephews and cousins who affectionately knew him as Uncle Dave. He is also survived by his former wife, Gail Golay.
Dave was born in Cleveland, Ohio on February 19th, 1941 to Paul and Dorothy Metzger (nee Krupitzer). He started his career with a stint in the US Air Force as a gas engine repairman and was always very proud of his military service. Upon leaving the service, Dave worked for a local gas company in Cleveland where he co-patented a proximity-responsive gas burner igniter. He also worked part time for HeathKit. He then relocated to Williamston, MI to pursue a long career in the insurance business, holding various roles throughout the years before retiring from Citizens Insurance Agency.
Dave married the love of his life, Sandra “Sandy” Gates in 1971. After 43 years of marriage, Sandy went home to God in 2014 but remained a shining beacon in Dave’s life.
Dave became an amateur radio enthusiast as a young teenager and followed this passion for the rest of his life. He made contact with hundreds of other HAM operators around the world and will forever be known as “K8GVK”.
Later in life, Dave took up remote-control (RC) aircraft flying and enjoyed hanging out with his buds at the flying field where his number of landings usually equaled his number of takeoffs.
Throughout his life, Dave always put faith and family first. He was a devout Christian and a proud member of the Family Life Wesleyan Church in Williamston. His proudest accomplishment was raising four independent and successful children whom he loved dearly. He took great joy in playing with his grandchildren, Tim Metzger and Eliana Metzger, and was even able to attend Tim’s wedding to Zahra in 2025.
Most importantly, David Metzger was a good man. He lived a simple life of faith, love and charity. He knew right from wrong and instilled those virtues in his children who continue to aspire to live by his example.
A prayer service will be held at 7:00 PM on Thursday, March 12 at Family Life Wesleyan Church in Williamston, MI, and will be livestreamed on the church’s Facebook page for those unable to attend. An interment service will be held for family members later in the year.
