Roberta “Birdie” I. Hitchcock, born December 31, 1944, went before us on May 16, 2013. She is survived by her husband of nearly 50 years, Glen (Steve) Hitchcock, children; Steve (Susie) Hitchcock, Shelly (Tom) Smith and Stacy Hitchcock, grandchildren whom she loved beyond words; Aaron, Wyatt, Kloe, Fletcher, Kortney, Tommie, Emilie and Mark, Jr., brother; Garold McGowan, sisters; Denelda Tanguay, Connie (Bob) Cole, Donna McGowan (friend Denny), Dorrine (Garry) Bach, several nieces and nephews, and her lifelong best friend; Katie Thornton. She was preceded in death by her mother and father; Howard & Zelma McGowan, sister; Dolores Bohnett and brother; Howard “Howdy” McGowan.
Birdie was a day care provider for over 25 years caring for grandkids, nieces, nephews and many school teachers children. She treated them all like her own. She loved to watch the newspaper for the accomplishments the kids achieved. She framed the articles and decorated them with stickers of congratulations, and they always knew Grandma or “Aunt Birdie” was proud of them.
For the past 10 years Steve and Birdie very much enjoyed traveling to Florida visiting sisters and brothers. She most enjoyed garage sales, daily trips to the dollar store and going to the casino with her sister and brother in law. Even during her sickest days she would send cards and notes to others in need. This was what she loved to do. Her thoughts and caring for others was endless.
The family would like to thank all the families and friends who touched her life, the staff at Sparrow Hospital and the amazing people at the Sparrow Hospice House. Donations can be made in memory of “Birdie” to: Sparrow Hospice of Mid-Michigan, PO Box 30480, Lansing, MI 48909.
