
He was born November 13, 1928 in Martin County to the late Major Thomas and Minnie Estelle Gardner.
He attended Jamesville High School through the 10th grade and served in the US Army for two years. Upon returning to Williamston he continued in the family business of farming.
He was a member of Fairview Christian Church and served as a deacon for many years.
He married Susie W. Gurganus, on August 6, 1954who joined him in working on the farm. He is survived by his wife Susie G. Gardner of 60 years.
He is also survived by son Matt Gardner and wife, Marlene Gardner, son Joe Gardner and wife, Sherry, son Bill Gardner and wife Michelle, daughter Sue Johnson and husband Stewart and daughter-in-law Eleanor Gardner, seven grandsons, six granddaughters two great grandsons and two great granddaughters, two sisters Mary Clyde Peele and Reba Grimes .
He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, four sisters and his son, Marvin Bradford Gardner.
He was well known in Martin County as Mr. Pete to many young people who had worked with him in the tobacco patch. They learned hard work could be made fun and the day would go by fast. He loved to pass out peppermints and always wanted to share a pop with all that came by. He will be greatly missed by many.
Visitation will be at Fairview Christian Church on March 10, 2015 from
6:30 pm to 8:30 pm. Funeral services will be held March 11,2015 at 2:30 pm
at Fairview Christian Church.
Memorials are suggested to Fairview Christian Church or any charity of the donor’s choice.
