
Mildred Thomas Taylor, 84, devoted wife, loving mother and grandmother, of 1171 Oakview Road Williamston, NC entered into heaven on Friday, September 24, 2010. Born September 23, 1926 in Hamilton, NC to William Franklin and Gertrude Rogers Thomas who preceded her in death, she was raised in the loving care of her grandparents, Nancy Willa (Ebbie) and James Ebenezer Edmondson in Williamston where she graduated from Williamston High School in 1943. She was by vocation an accountant in private business, the U.S. Government and the Roanoke Rapids School System, retiring in 1971.
After living in Reidsville, NC from 1961 to 1965 and Roanoke Rapids, NC from 1965 to 1971, her family returned to Williamston where they have resided in Woodland Acres.
Since 1971 she has been deeply involved as an active member of Memorial Baptist Church where she was baptized in 1942 until her health began to fail. She served as WMU Director for six years, a group leader for 5 years, an adult Sunday School teacher and in 1991 wrote a History of Women in The Memorial Baptist Church, which was founded in 1870.
Also in 1971 she became a valuable member of the Woman's Club of Williamston. In addition to serving a total of six years as President of the Club, she served as NCFWC District Fifteen President from 1982-84. She served on the Executive Board continually from 1972 until 2001. She received numerous awards from the Williamston club including: 1978 Woman of the Year; 1983 - 88 - 94 awards of Excellence and in 1996 was the recipient of a Life Membership Award.
She was married on May 22, 1951 to Van Ralph Taylor who survives. Surviving also is a son, Dr. Greg Taylor and wife Cathy of Jamestown, NC; grandson, Justin Taylor of Seattle, WA, granddaughter, Jessica Taylor of Jamestown, NC, a sister, Gladys (Sug) Rogerson of Williamston, NC; sister¬ in-law, Amy Edwards of Williamston, NC; nephews Tommy Furlough and Brian Thomas of Hamilton, NC, nieces Mary Gladys Waters, of Greenville, NC, Ebbie Hatton of Hamilton, Ohio, Kristi Lamb of Apex, NC, Lisa Grimes of Cary, NC and many devoted great nieces and nephews.
Preceding her in death were a brother, Bill Thomas in 1987 and a sister, Peggy Furlough in 2006.
Visitation will be at Biggs Funeral Home in Williamston, NC on Monday, September 27 at 7:00 p.m. Funeral service will be held at Memorial Baptist Church at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, September 28, 2010. Burial will follow at Martin Memorial Gardens, Williamston, NC
