Herbert Emory Joyce, MD - October 25, 2019, at age 98. Dr. Joyce passed away peacefully in his home at Canterbury Woods, Williamsville, surrounded by his loving family. He was predeceased by his beloved wife of 69 years, Ruth (Adams) Joyce; cherished father of Christine Joyce Miller (Ray), James E. (MaryAnn Even) Joyce and William L. (Anne Harding) Joyce; adored grandfather of Stacey
Miller McDermott, Brian Miller, Sarah Genau, Margaret Joyce and Molly Joyce ; dearest great grandfather of Tiernan and Lorcan McDermott, William and Alexandra Genau, Adeline and Charlotte Belliveau. He graduated from East High School, the University of Buffalo In 1941 receiving a Bachelor of Science; and receiving a Doctor of Medicine in 1945 from UB Medical School. He did his
internship at Deaconess Hospital in 1945. He had a long military service record including US Army Captain serving on the Governor’s Staff in the Panama Canal Zone from 1946-1948 and Lt. Colonel Flight Surgeon in the Air National Guard from 19481960. His hospital affiliations included Deaconess Hospital, Buffalo General and Millard Fillmore Suburban. Dr. Joyce practiced clinical medicine from
1948-1995 founding Highgate Medical Group in 1966 and was a Professor of Family Medicine at UB from 1970-1993. Dr. Joyce’s professional affiliations included American Academy of Family Physicians (President 1959-1960); NYS Academy of Family Physicians (President 1974-1975); Erie County Medical Society (President 1965-1966); NYS Medical Society (Committee Chair of Hospital Relations). Dr. Joyce was instrumental in establishing a Residency Program at State University of Buffalo for Family Medicine with periodic specialty accreditation. He served on the Emeritus Medical Faculty at UB Medical School. After retiring from clinical medicine In 1995, Dr. Joyce served as the Quality and Case Review Director at Independent Health. Dr. Joyce received numerous awards and citations for his work on behalf of Family Medicine on both the local and state levels, including the
NYS Academy of Family Physicians Max Cheplove Award in 1993 and the Distinguished Medical Alumnus Award in 2009 from the UB School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences. Dr. Joyce was a member of The Buffalo Club and the Country Club of Buffalo.
