Arthur “Art” Crampton, a long-time resident of Wilmette and Evanston, Illinois, died on Sunday, December 12, 2021, at the age of 93. Son of the late Charles S. Crampton and Ethel (Heath) Crampton, Art was born in Cambridge, MA and moved to Wilmette with his family when he was a young boy.
After graduating from New Trier High School, he received a Bachelor of Science from Northwestern University, and a Doctor of Medicine from Tufts University Medical School. He completed his medical residency in radiology at Evanston Hospital where he established a long career of over 40 years as a radiologist. His keen intellect and undaunting curiosity formed his success as a physician and influenced his diverse interests.
Art also had a great affection for northern Wisconsin where he and his wife Ada, enjoyed scores of canoe trips, long walks in the woods and sitting on the dock watching the sunset. A map of Wisconsin still hangs in his lake house with dozens of pushpins marking the numerous lakes explored during their canoeing adventures.
Interested in the arts, especially music, drawing, and sculpture he observed all things deeply. And in his later years a passion for chocolate cake put him on a first name basis at his favorite local bakery as he consumed a cake a week for the past 5+ years!
Art was a caring, loving, and generous husband, father, and grandfather. Preceding him in death was his wife, Ada B. Crampton, and brother Donald Crampton. He is survived by his children, Norma (Bob) Bergquist, Cynthia (Russell Phillips) Crampton, David (Alana Mezo) Crampton, Paul (Jennifer Haywood) Crampton, and Janet (Kelly Herd) Crampton; grandchildren, Julia Phillips Marquez, Sara Phillips, Phoebe Crampton-Haywood, Amani Bergquist, Matthew and Jacob Herd, and great granddaughter, Sofia
Marquez.
Due to COVID the family has decided to hold a celebration of his life at a future date,
yet to be determined, so that family and friends can gather safely.
