Barbara Alice Bobrich was born in Chicago on July, 1, 1934 to George and Helen Bobrich. As a young girl, Barbara and her sister, Melsa, would participate in classes at the dance school where their mother played piano. Miss Bobrich was also interested in nature, which led to her career in teaching science. After graduating from Schurz High School, Barbara received her bachelor's and two master's degrees in science and teaching from Northwestern University. In 1956, Miss Bobrich began her teaching career at Maine Township High School (now Maine East). She taught science and eventually took over the Pom Pon Squad, as well as helping with the V-show. In 1964, Maine South opened its doors, and Barbara became a Biology teacher there. Known fondly by her squad as "Miss B" and "Beez," Miss Bobrich founded the "Pom Pon South" which soon became the Hawkettes.
The Hawkettes would travel with the band to destinations such as Disney World, Busch Gardens, Washington D.C. and several universities such as De Paul, Northern and Loyola. The Hawkettes performed on the "Bozo Circus" show, as well as many other exciting venues like the Chicago Stadium and Comiskey Park. The team then began competing in 1979. Barbara's dedication to Maine South and the Hawkettes program was unmatched. Her legacy will live on in every young dancer who is proud to call herself a Hawkette.
Miss Bobrich was an inspiration to so many of her students and dancers. She embodied what a professional woman should be: strong, well-travelled, interesting… a leader, confident, poised. She inspired many to think beyond their own little world and look at the possibilities, and that was evident at the 2014 banquet honoring her contribution to the school. Her success in motivating her “girls” was evident because of their successes: They became authors, vocalists, medical professionals, business executives, professors. She changed lives in so many ways.
After retiring from Maine South in 2001, Barbara and her sister continued to travel and divided their time between Chicago and Hilton Head, South Carolina. As lifelong dog owners, they competed in AKC Trials with their Miniature Schnauzers.
Barbara was preceded in death by her parents and her dear sister. A graveside service will be held Wednesday, September 7, 11:00 am at Waldheim Cemetery. Donations may be made in her name to Best Friends Animal Sanctuary.
