Whatever else anyone may remember about Eilene Delsohn, who passed away on Tuesday, April 19, 2022 at the age of 97, this one fact was indisputable right up to the end of her life: nothing made her happier than hearing good news from or about her children, grandchildren or great grandchildren.
Eilene was the proud and devoted mother of four grown children, eight wonderful grandchildren and four adorable great grandchildren, and she was deeply devoted to all of them. They kept in touch with her and she was always offering words of encouragement and support.
Eilene, whose date of birth is November 5, 1924, was born and raised on the West Side of Chicago and graduated from Manley High School in 1942. That’s where she met Norman, her loving husband of 57 years before he passed away in November 2000.
They were married on May 23, 1943 at Fort Monmouth, New Jersey, where Norman was stationed at the time in the U.S. Army.
The couple eventually moved to the northside of Chicago, where they raised their four kids: Penny, Shaaron, Gary and Steve.
In addition to keeping up with her family, Eilene loved to travel, read, follow politics and the news and she and Norman spent many happy years together in Chicago with close friends and family.
Eilene was a social and outgoing person with a warm sense of humor and a lot of charm and empathy for others. She had a number of close friends from childhood who enjoyed one another’s company for many years. They all kept in touch and spent time together over the decades regardless of what else was occurring in their lives or with their families.
In December 2019, Eilene moved from Chicago to Southern California to live with her son, Steve, and his wife, Mary Kay. Eventually, she relocated to a nearby assisted living facility in Ventura County not far from Los Angeles.
In the final months of her life, Eilene was able to spend quality time with kids and grandkids who came to visit and they enjoyed good meals, spirited conversation and just being together. Family was everything to Eilene and she will be deeply missed by those who loved her and everyone who called her a friend.
In addition to her four children, Eilene is survived by grandkids Brynie, Bari, Josh, Joseph, Amanda, Max, Ezra and Gracie.
