Erica Yvonne Friederici nee Bachem, age 90, died peacefully at home on February 5. Erica, or Eki to many close friends, was a mother, wife, grandmother, chemist, dancer, and world traveler. Erica was a lifelong Chicagoan (and Cubs fan) who grew up in Andersonville as the daughter of German immigrants and as a sister to Wolfgang “Wulle” Bachem. She and her husband Hartmann lived for many years in Highland Park. She will be remembered for her love of spending time outdoors—especially on a Lake Michigan beach or sailboat—her sense of humor, razor-sharp ability to solve crossword puzzles, and facility in composing humorous poems for birthdays and other occasions; her love of music, shrimp dishes, and manhattans; and above all her loving attitude. She is survived by children Claudia (Rick) Petersen, Peter (Michele James) Friederici, and Andrea (Jim) Ross, by grandchildren Anneliese, Greg, Erika, Annie, and Liam, and by the dedicated friends who allowed her to live her final years with dignity: Krystyna, Barbara, and Ewa. A memorial service will be at the Michigan Shores Club, 911 Michigan Avenue in Wilmette, on Saturday, February 13, at 11 AM, with visitation from 9 to 11 AM. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Music Institute of Chicago scholarship fund (https://www.musicinst.org/giving) or Openlands Eco Explorations program (http://www.openlands.org/openlands-lakeshore-preserve).
