Geoffrey Higgins passed away on January 25th at his home in Winnetka. He was born in Wigan, Lancashire England in 1932 and earned his BS, MS, and a PHD in metallurgical engineering from the University of Manchester. He worked for the British Atomic Energy Authority and later as a lecturer at the University of Liverpool. In 1969 Geoff moved with his family to the US for a planned three year stay. As it turned out, Geoff stayed on in his faculty position at liT in Chicago, where he later became Dean of the Graduate school, and lived with his family in Winnetka for 47 years. After retiring from liT, Geoff joined his wife, Heather, as a partner in their antique business. His favorite part of the business was buying antiques at auctions. Geoff was very knowledgeable about English china, assembled an unusual collection of commemorative pitchers, and was also a passionate gardener. Geoff met his wife, Heather Higgins, when they were
both students at the University of Manchester. They married in 1957 and had five children: Andrew, (Martha) Jacqueline, (Richard) Mark, (Susan) Jill, (Barry) and Peter, leading to eight grandchildren. Geoff is also survived by his brother David. Spending time with his children and their families was Geoffs greatest joy. Above all, Geoffrey Higgins' was a gentleman and a man of utmost integrity. A memorial service will be held Friday, January 29, 3 PM at Wm. H. Scott Funeral Home, 1100 Greenleaf Ave., Wilmette. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to H.O.M.E., homeseniors.org.
