She was born Irma Kravitz on February 6th, 1938 in Brooklyn, New York to William and Sophie Kravitz. Seven years later, her sister Marilyn was born and the two remained close throughout their lives. The family moved from Brighton Beach to Sheepshead Bay in Brooklyn and finally to Park Avenue in Manhattan where Irma’s great taste and sense of style landed her a job as an interior decorator.
In the summer of 1963, at the Concord Resort in the Catskill’s, Irma met Eddie Schwartz from Chicago. It was love at first site and the two became inseparable. They were engaged six weeks later and married on November 23rd of that year, the day after President John F. Kennedy was assassinated. But not even that tragic event could dampen their joy and excitement of embarking on a life together.
The two had three children, Michael, Lisa and David (Marcy Miller) and were blessed with 8 grandchildren; Olivia and Ava Stein and Elliot, Simon, Emily, Isabel, Wesley and Zachary Schwartz, all of whom stayed close to their Mother/Grandmother throughout her life.
A true Matriarch, Irma loved her family fiercely and was the central unifying figure, who was always there on a moments notice for her family The glue that held the family together, she always knew everything about everyone and made sure everyone else knew it too. She cultivated a network of friends that lasted a lifetime and extended on to the friends of grandchildren and grandnieces.
Irma loved travel, movies and TV (both thoughtful and trashy) and always knew where to find a truly good cheeseburger, even if she was very particular about it. Irma lived her life with class, grace and beauty all the way through to the end and her memory will live on in all who knew and loved her.
