Janie Marie (Jessup) Short was born to the late James Matthew Jessup and Nellie Virginia (Whitteker) Jessup on January 24, 1945 in Duhring, WV. She grew up surrounded by aunts, uncles, and cousins in a house built by her Dad in Whittaker Hollow. She accepted the Lord and was baptized in the Bluestone River at the age of 12. She attended Montcalm High School where she was a cheerleader and was the recipient of the American Legion Award.
Upon graduation in 1963 she moved with her mother to join her father and brothers in Chicago. In December of that same year she would marry Terry Ray Short who she had met at The Corner Shop in Bramwell, WV. Terry and Janie would be married over 58 years.
Janie and Terry settled in Chicago in 1965, and in 1969 would begin their family with the birth of their daughter Deana followed by the birth of their son Terry, Jr. in 1973. Her children were her “pride and joy” and she would often say she felt the reason she was put on this earth was to be their mom. She filled their lives with silly songs, imaginative play, dancing, and an abundance of love.
Janie was an avid gardener and crocheter. She loved showing off her flowers and making blankets for those she loved.
Janie worked off and on at St. Francis Hospital for more than 30 years where she met and maintained lifelong friends that became her extended family. She was also a member of Rogers Park Baptist Church where she would serve as part of the Special Events Committee and there too made lifelong friends.
In 2000, she began a role that she may have cherished the most - NANA. She loved and adored each of her four grandchildren and had sweet and special relationships with all of them.
Janie is survived by her daughter Deana Marie Short (Larry) Rife, son Terry Ray (Heather) Short, Jr., grandchildren Noah Hiram Rife, Molly Marie Short, Skyler Virginia Rife, and Joshua Ray Short. She is also survived by her beloved brother Johnny (Sally) Jessup, her loving brother-in-law Frank (Debbie) Short, her cousin Dorothy Hall, other cousins, and her nieces and nephews, all of whom she loved dearly. Janie was preceded in death by her husband Terry Ray Short and her big brother James Marion (Julie) Jessup.
Funeral service Saturday, November 29, 11AM at Wm. H. Scott Funeral Home, 1100 Greenleaf Ave, Wilmette, IL 60091. Burial will take place at Memorial Park Cemetery.
