Dear Scott Family,

I was deeply saddened to learn of Jay's passing today.

Jay and I worked together in Kansas City selling copiers when we both got our first jobs out of college.

We were good friends and Jay was a groomsman in our wedding.

Later we moved to Chicago and Jay showed my wife and I, Chicago like only he could.

The Cubs, Sox, and Greek Town. We have a love for Chicago because we got to see it through Jay.

He was a great friend to all.

Deepest Sympathies to the Scott family.  I read through the entries before me and my eyes swelled for Jay was all the above.  A joviel spirited man with that chuckle.  He was my colleague and in our encounters over the years we always shared a chuckle. A kind man gone too soon.

I was saddened to hear the news. Jay was such a good friend to our family even though he only dated my sister for a short while. They remained friends and thus Jay was at our home taking care of a few things for my dad or helping Lisa out with one thing or another. As a young adult I remember good times in the city celebrating one thing or another with my sisters, parents and of course my husband to be. He was basically like the brother we didn't have.
I hadn't seen him for a while since we moved to Missouri but my family spoke of him and still worked with him. I know he will be missed.

I have worked with Jay for a short period of time. I know him as someone who always had a smile on his face and was easy to talk to. People like him make the world a better place. My condolences to the Scott family. May God's peace be with you.

So many years since i've lived in the Chicago area -so many years since I have seen any of you.  I think of you all often and remember so fondly my every day walk to high school with Jay and the great friendship we forged between time with close friends and church dinners.  Listening to our dad's singing barbershop and understanding our spot as the well cared for youngest children Jay and I shared so much.  I have thought of Jay so often wishing time had not been such a separator.  I can still hear his laugh and remember his frustration when he believed in me more than i did.  His big heart and love of family and friends will always stick with me.

Mr. and Mrs. Scott, you have my deepest sympathies for a loss so unexpected.  I only hope you can find some solace in knowing you raised a fine son that left an indelible mark on the lives he touched. 

When we met at KU in '81, little did I know that would start a friendship lasting over 30 years.  Too short, though, and too many memories to relate.  

Jay and I did get together in April, this year, for our annual, "Good Friday Afternoon Club", an offshoot of days in Lawrence.   We talked about families, friends, KU, etc., mentioning several people in these posts.  It was the same conversations we had over the years, yet never grew tired of.   Anyone who knew Jay knows what I am talking about.  Always familiar. Always hilarious and animated. Able to wax-on about all manner of good times, bad times, antics  peppered with that enduring laugh that will always make us smile.  Quintessential Jay, which was always enough.  

I will miss my friend.

That Jay served us so well as our broker in the challenging task of guiding our share market investments barely touches on the
special relationship we had with this young man, a high school
classmate and close friend of our son Edward.  In this role,
trust is a key factor, and he certainly  embodied that virtue. But
our business with him was always made all the more pleasant
because of his gracious and pleasant manner and good cheer.
We will miss him.

Jay was a unique and caring friend with the ability to make you feel like you were the only person in the room. His intelligence and warmth made him enjoyable to be around and you were always guaranteed a great time when you were with Jay. 

My condolences to all his family and be proud of the man he was and how he brought joy to many lives. He was a special man that always made you feel special too.

Mr. and Mrs. Scott, my sincere condolences to you and your family in this tragic loss.  My prayers for peace are with you.

Jay and I met a little over 8 years ago and quickly became very close friends.  His sense of humor and personality absolutely were contagious and his outgoing charm brought smiles to many people around him.  You could often find us out dancing like fools or acting a bit boisterous, but almost always laughing.  Not only was Jay jovial and spirited, he was a very caring, thoughtful and generous person.  We met or spoke on the phone almost every day for years.  Jay's effervescent smile, bright blue eyes, and his unforgettable laugh are etched in my memory. 

I am deeply saddened at the loss of one of the very best friends I've ever had.  I am lucky to have known him.  Someone told me, that death leaves a heartache no one can heal, but love leaves a memory that no one can steal.  
Rest in peace Jay Scott.

Jay had a unique ability to make everyone with him feel great joy.  Even in our loss I can't help but smile in the crazy, silly memories.   Always my brother,

My deepest condolences to your family for the sudden death of your loved one.

I knew Jay at Sears and NTE, and he's one of those who everybody liked to have around because he could get along great with all types.  There wasn't a thing anyone couldn't like about him.

I met Jay only once while having brunch and a few drinks at a bar in River North.  Right away, he struck up a conversation with me and we spoke and laughed for hours about all sorts of things.  He had a kind heart and it saddens me to hear he passed away.  My condolences to his family.

I have had the pleasure of working with Jay since 2007. A really nice guy who always had a twinkle in his eye, a grin on his face and a giggle when he spoke. I am truly saddened by his passing and wish the extended Scott family my deepest condolences. He certainly will be missed.

I knew Jay through Maureen. He was much loved and will be so missed. Our sympathies' to Maureen and Jay's family.

I met Jay in my driveway. I was in third grade and my sister had just broken her leg. I will never forget because after he left I asked my sister if he "liked" her. It was the first time a "boy" had been to our house for Lisa. 
She laughed and said "I don't know!"
That was the beginning of what became one of the deepest friendships my sister has ever had. Yes, these two little kids, 14 and 15 years old, dated for about a hot second. But that was just the beginning. Jay became a family member. He and Lisa would end up at college together. My parent's employed him. And he and my father were really kindred spirits. Both Loud, funny, gregarious men. They could both command a room. I am sure that is why we all loved Jay so. He was the brother we never had. And we all fought and loved, just like he really was our brother. The Cervinka Family will always include Jay. And although we rarely saw him, now almost 40 years into our relationship, he leaves a very big hole in our lives. The one thing I know for sure, is that he and my father are having a beer and laughing at all us goofy broads! 
My deepest sympathies to the Scott family, who should be so proud of who Jay was to so many of us!

I have so many fond memories of Jay and that laugh will forever stay with me. He was a kind hearted man who I was lucky to have met him when I first moved to Chicago. He was always there with a kind word and ear. I will remember him fondly and will miss running into him around river north. My deepest condolences to you and your family.

Say Hey, Vote for Jay!!  South school elementary school president.  I was his campaign manager.  We were best friends!  5th grade.  California in the good ol' days!  We were the three muskateers!  Unstoppable and all in charge!  I'll miss him but have my memories!  My best to his family!

Jay and I were pledge brothers in the Sigma Chi house at the University of Kansas. I have many great memories of Jay and all of them centered around his terrific sense of humor and sense of adventure. Rest in peace my friend.

"They call me 'Jay' but my real name is 'John'.  I believe we all can close our eyes and hear his laugh.  How sweet he was from the very start.  Personable, Gregarious.... and yes all the ladies always happy to say hi. Rest in Peace dear friend.

I met Jay 22 years ago. We talked every day, often several times a day, for about 12 years when I lived in Chicago. We had meals together once or twice a week for more than a decade. He saw me at my best and my worst, and on Sept. 11, when my office closed down early due to threats downtown and the subway to my neighborhood shut down and I was in shock at what I had watched on TV that morning, Jay called me and said he was coming for me. He rushed down to my office in the South Loop and we walked many blocks together to his apartment and watched the coverage of the attacks and the news together for two days and cried and then he rode with me in the cab back to my apartment. He was that kind of friend. Anyone who has laughed with Jay knows how real he was and how joyfully he went about life. He was brilliant, funny, kind, hard-working, and one of the overall best people I have ever known. He could be the loudest person in the room or could sit still and silently on a balcony doing and saying nothing and talking about how blessed he was to have the life he had. I was so very blessed to know him. My deepest condolences to family and friends.

Jay and I met at KU and like Bart Robertson said, so many of my memories from those happy days involve him. We were a couple of slightly-off-round pegs and had a ton of fun together. I was on the phone with Jay a couple of years ago. I don't think we had spoken for 10 years or more but it was as if no time had passed. I can't remember what we were talking about but I can promise you that we were both laughing. I had been thinking about a long overdue trip to Chicago and there were only two things on my list. See pal Bob Finholm and catch up with  Jay. 

I hope there's a dive-bar in heaven and Jay will be waiting there for me.

I met Jay in the Indian Hill swimming pool at the age of 12 - he stuck out his hand and said  Hi - I'm Jay Scott - and shook my hand - that was the beginning of a 40 year relationship of all kinds of fun, mischief, laughs, a few fights along the way of course, many deep discussions, more laughs and of course chasing girls.  Jay was always the spontaneous one in the group - always the one to find the next fun party - where the prettiest girls were - and he always loved meeting new people and never hesitated to stick out that hand and say - Hi I'm Jay Scott - and proceed to entertain and charm whoever he was with using humor and spirit-  we had many great times buddy - I will miss you dearly - happy birthday

Jay and I were pledge brothers at University of Kansas and made wonderful memories for 4 years in Lawrence.  Luckily, we were able to keep having great times at some amazing 'Cubs weekends' in Wrigleyville.  He was a good friend that brought a smile to everyone's face.   Godspeed, my brother.

I met Jay as freshmen on the New Trier swim team. Jay was a fast swimmer, but what he really enjoyed was the friendships. Jay was fun to be around, and he became a core part of a special group of New Trier classmates -- boys and girls -- who still keep in close contact almost forty years later.  Jay's parents always welcomed (and fed) us in their home on Essex Road, a block from the high school.  

I was not only Jay's friend, I was one of his clients. For over 20 consecutive years, we met for an annual holiday lunch to discuss the year's returns. Jay loved his job, but not much business was discussed at those lunches--just updates on our friends and families, with lots of stories and laughs. That's how I will remember Jay. 

Jay's friends have been sharing memories of Jay via email, and we plan to meet in person soon to do more of the same, as Jay would have wanted. 

Jay always remembered my birthday. Today, on September 19th, it's my turn to remember his: Happy Birthday, my friend.

Dear family and friends, so sorry for your loss, you can find the solace or comfort you need in God's word at (Ecclesiastes 9:11, 12) John (5:25, 28-29) my condolences.

What endeared me to Jay was his easygoing manner.  Talk to him for few minutes and the problems of the world would recede.  The sound of his voice, the chuckle, there was a warmth to it that made you feel at ease.

He was part of our gang at high school.  And while he very much participated in our group activities -- which as I recall was usually a bunch of us hanging out trying to find a party to crash -- he'd often make forays on his own or with his partner in crime Adam.  Or he'd be out with his girlfriend, and then our group activity would turn into "let's find Jay!", and we'd drive around the North Shore trying to locate his very distinctive 70s Buick Riviera.

Another memory I have of Jay is walking to his house on Essex Road after school on occasion, where his mother would make PB&Js for us and would chat with us for a bit.

I almost joined the Sigma Chi fraternity at my college, one reason being that I could then be a "brother" to Jay.

My condolences to Jay's family.  I'm going to miss him.

Jay was my Financial Advisor for the past 9 years, I met him a year before through a mutual friend. He taught me a lot, he was patient, and he was warm and so funny. I will miss that laugh oh, that laugh. He often spoke of his Mother. To her, and his entire family I would like to thank you for sharing such a great guy.

I am so sorry to hear of your loss. Jay was a man of honor with a caring heart and a gift of humor.  

It was never "just business" with Jay. When Ralph died last year, Jay reassured me that things would be okay. He was someone I knew I could trust.  He helped me negotiate the piles of forms and red tape required to get to my new normal.

I will miss Jay's Tuesday morning calls. I will miss teasing him about the cold Chicago weather versus the warm Texas weather. I will miss his reassuring voice and his laugh.  I am so glad that he was in my life.

Jay was always like a whirling wind, softer than a tornado but much more than a summer's breeze. You could always tell when he was around! He was seldom serious, which was a loving trait but frustrating when trying to get something done. Our position, broker to assistant, was at times confused with mother to son! He will be missed.

I had the privilege of being Jay's assistant at work for the past 12 years. Not only were we collegues, we were friends. My words cannot express the sorrow and loss I feel about his untimely passing. Each day I will miss seeing him come into the office with his laugh, his love for what he did, and for every quirky thing about him that made him who he was.

I did not know Jay all that well or for very long - but he always had a smile and kind greeting when our paths crossed.  We shared like-minded values and philosophies, so I have no doubt we would have become fast friends.  I will miss him, as will our entire Wells family here at Union Station.  My prayers are with you all - RIP dear Jay. You have left us much too soon.


Jay had a very caring heart and a great laugh. I'm sure going to miss him, his crazy stories and his weird sense of humor. He told me jokes that I sometimes didn't get but, laughed anyway just to hear his laugh :)
I want to share this special memory that I will forever treasure of your son. 
2 1/2 years ago when I returned from a personal leave of absense due the passing of one of my 2yr old twin daughters - Jay left a card on my desk. It was the first thing I saw when I sat at my desk. When I opened the envelope and saw the card and read it I instantly began to cry and laugh at the same time. You see the card he gave me had a Monkey on it and my baby loved Monkeys and loved to imitate them too. (There was no way Jay would've known this). But, the funniest thing was that the card was actually a birthday card LOL! And in it he crossed out the words: 

"Does somebody need a birthday hug?" 

and he wrote the following: 

      "We're glad you're back! 
               Jay 
              
           (I liked the pic)" 


I took it as a sign from Heaven that everything was going to be alright! So from one grieving parent to another, look for the signs - they might not come right away but, when they do, you'll know and somehow everything will be alright!

I met Jay in the fall of 1981. We became great friends at the University of Kansas. Most if my memories of that time are associated with Jay. He was smart, funny, charismatic, and genuine. He was a great friend and a great man. He will be missed.
