K. Peter Knobel, a beloved father, grandfather, great grandfather and respected member of the community, peacefully passed away on January 13th 2024 at the age of 89. He leaves behind a legacy of professional accomplishments, steadfast faith, and a profound love for his family.
Born on May 27, 1934 in Evanston IL, K. Peter Knobel graduated from Purdue University in 1956 with a BS in engineering, which marked the beginning of his remarkable life journey. In 1958, he joined the family kitchen and bath business, quickly becoming a notable figure in the industry, excelling in design, sales, and ensuring the satisfaction of numerous customers.
K. Peter Knobel was a pioneer in the kitchen and bath design industry, being part of the second wave of Certified Kitchen Designers (CKD) and achieving nationwide accreditation. He remained committed to staying updated with industry trends and changes, dedicating seven years to testing and monitoring continuing education. As soon as the Certified Bath Designer (CBD) accreditation was established, he achieved that certification as well.
His dedication extended beyond his professional life. K. Peter Knobel was actively involved in the Chicago Midwest chapter of the National Kitchen & Bath Association (NKBA) and served as its president in 1994 and again for another two-year term in 1996. A few years ago, he was recognized at the national NKBA convention for his remarkable 50 years of active work with the CKD accreditation.
Peter remained active in his professional and leadership roles until June 2022, with the family business celebrating its 89th year of operation in Wilmette.
His profound love for St. John's Lutheran Church in Wilmette, where he belonged for an incredible 89 years, was a cornerstone of his life. He sang in the church choir and was actively involved in leading adult education meetings and various church activities. In honor of his passion for gardening, the family will be making a generous donation to start a garden at St. John's Lutheran Church in his memory.
However, his greatest devotion was to his family. Peter Knobel was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather who treasured every moment spent with his loved ones. His wisdom, humor, and love will be deeply missed by his two Children and his five Grandchildren who carry forward the values and traditions he held dear.
K. Peter Knobel is survived by his children Mark Knobel and Juliane Ruff, his brother Paul (Cathie) Knobel, his grandchildren Samantha Whitehead, Nicole (Andy) Frankel, Brandon Whitehead, Emily Knobel, the late LCpl Peter Knobel, and his great granddaughter Summer Frankel. His memory will forever live on in the hearts of those who had the privilege of knowing him. A memorial service will be held at St.John’s Lutheran Church in Wilmette on Saturday, January 20, 2024 at 11:00am.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to St. John’s Lutheran Church garden sanctuary in his honor.
