Kelly worked at the Los Angeles Times for 25 years until her departure from the paper in 2015. She served in a variety of roles, most recently as the Arts and Culture editor and previously as the movie editor, Sunday Calendar editor, and assistant editor in the National section. During the 2003-04 year, she was selected for and participated in the prestigious John S. Knight residential fellowship program at Stanford University.
Born in Evanston, Illinois on July 12, 1954 to John Robert Scott and Joan Boon Scott, she was the youngest of six children. The family moved to Houston, Texas in 1968 after John was reassigned by the U.S. Steel Corporation, where she attended and graduated from Memorial High School. She went on to receive her B.A. in journalism from the University of Kansas.
After graduating from KU, where she was the managing editor of The Daily Kansan, she began her career as a reporter at the St. Petersburg Times in Florida in 1976. As a staff writer, Kelly covered breaking news, local government, politics, and later music and film for the paper. She left to work as a freelance writer in Atlanta in 1982 before returning to St. Petersburg as a news features writer in 1984. Kelly moved to New York in 1987 to work as an entertainment editor at Newsday, where she spent three years before relocating to Los Angeles. She began her career at the Los Angeles Times as Deputy Movie Editor in May 1990.
In addition to her decorated career in journalism, Kelly was a parent, aunt, loyal friend, and remarkably determined, resilient, and curious person. Her interests included being a lifelong baseball and (after moving to Los Angeles) Dodger fan and a supporter of the Kansas Jayhawks men’s basketball program, her alma mater. She was also a voracious reader, passionate political observer, and enjoyer of Bruce Springsteen live in concert many times. She was a cancer survivor for nearly 50 years after her initial diagnosis in college.
Kelly will be deeply missed and remembered by her two children, Devin Mitchell of Sacramento, California and Susannah Mitchell of Chicago, Illinois; her sister Tracy Fairman and brother-in-law David Fairman of Highland Park, Illinois; her sister Trish Egan and brother-in-law John Egan of Houston, Texas; her brother Casey Scott and sister-in-law Lisa Smith of Denver, Colorado; her sister Nancy Beren and brother-in-law Richard Beren of Seattle, Washington; and her brother Michael Scott and sister-in-law Nancy Scott of La Jolla, California. A celebration of life will be held in the Los Angeles area later this spring.
