

Merrill Herbert Greenberger died June 12th, 2025, surrounded by his family. Merrill was born on March 17th, 1937 in Chicago to Irving and Sadie Greenberger. He grew up in the Rogers Park neighborhood of Chicago before attending University of Illinois and University of Chicago School of Medicine. His ophthalmology training was done at Michael Reese Hospital and Medical Center and University of Chicago.
Merrill served in the United States Army from 1963 to 1965 before being honorably discharged as a Captain. He became an ophthalmologist and opened his practice, Eye Care Ltd in Skokie, before retiring in 2013.
Merrill married Barbara Ross on November 23rd, 1961, and they lived in Chicago before living in Washington, Texas, and Oregon during his military career. They returned to the Chicago area and raised their children, Shari, Steven, and Lisa, in Skokie before downsizing to Morton Grove. Starting in 2002 they became seasonal residents of Sarasota, Florida.
Merrill’s hobbies included golf, tennis, bike riding, scuba diving, traveling, and attending Chicago Bulls games. He was active in the community as a member of the Stoneybrook Club, D68 School Board, and serving as president of the medical staff of Skokie hospital and president of the Illinois Society of Eye Physicians & Surgeons.
Merrill was predeceased by his parents, Irving and Sadie, brother Stuart, his daughter Shari Baker, his aunt, Millie Horwitz; uncle, Myron (Florence) Miller, his cousins Allen Greenberger and Eleanor Melnick, and brother-in-law Bill Ross.
Merrill is survived by his wife, Barbara, his children Steven (Kimberly) Greenberger and Lisa (Vivian) Khabeer, grandchildren Aaron Baker, Vanessa (Mike) Fleming, Jeremy Litberg, Maya Baker, Alexandra Greenberger, Adin Greenberger, Sasha Baker, and Maci Khabeer, son-in-law Conrad (the late Shari) Baker, sisters-in-law, Rivia (the late Stuart) Greenberger and Deidre (the late Bill) Ross, nieces and nephews, Kathy (Steve) Greenberger-Slaggert, Mark (Robin) Greenberger, Karen Topp, Darcy (Josh) Babcock, Robert Ross and numerous great nieces and nephews.
A funeral service will be held at 12:30 p.m. on Sunday, June 15, 2025 at Weinstein & Piser Funeral Home 111 Skokie Blvd., Wilmette, Illinois. Interment will be at Memorial Park Cemetery 9900 Gross Point Road, Skokie, Illinois. For shiva information please call the funeral home at 847-256-5700.
