Michael Charles Lichtenstein, 86, of Lincolnwood, passed away peacefully. He was the beloved husband of Charlene "Shaynee" Lichtenstein and the late Lois Chait Lichtenstein; loving father of Todd (Margaret) Lichtenstein, Beth Lichtenstein Alpert, and stepfather to Karen Goodman and Mark Levant; proud Zadie of Alyse Lora Lichtenstein, Sophie Ruth Lichtenstein, Arnold Jack Alpert, and Cole Bennett Alpert. He was the cherished son of the late Byron and Evelyn Lichtenstein and brother to the late Gloria (Bill) Merrill. Michael was also a dear brother-in-law to Steve (Bonnie Brown) Chait, the late Hy (Elsie) Schwartz, the late Jack (Beverly) Schwartz, and the late Lee (Norma) Schwartz. He is survived by many loving nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
Michael proudly served his country in the U.S. Army in Korea, working in communications and entertaining his fellow soldiers with his folk music talents. After his military service, he worked in the fast-evolving electronics industry and became a professor of Mathematics and Computing at DeVry University, where he inspired countless students.
In addition to his professional achievements, Michael was an avid photographer and a "Mr. Fix-It". He was known for his selfless generosity, always giving his time and talents. He was a long-time, dedicated member of Ezra-Habonim, the Niles Township Jewish Congregation, the Willow Hill Chapter of ORT America, and Lutheran General Volunteers. Michael was also a proud member of the Jewish War Veterans.
Michael’s legacy is one of love, devotion, and service to his family, community, and country. His kindness, warmth, and sense of humour will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
Memorial contributions to Ezra-Habonim the Niles Township Jewish Congregation (ehnt.org), Chicago Mitzvah Campaign (chicagomitzvahcampaign.org) or Alzheimer's Association (alz.org) in Michael's name would be greatly appreciated.
