Morton "Mort" Goldenberg, age 90, passed away at his home in Madison, Wisconsin on Saturday, October 15, 2022. Born June 13, 1932 in Chicago, a son of Benjamin and Adele (Reisler) Goldenberg. Mort is survived by his loving wife of 66 years, Dorothea "Dot" (Sherman); his sons, Dr. Brad Goldenberg (Tammee) of Oak Park, IL, and Alan Goldenberg (Sarah) of Madison, WI. He is also survived by his 5 grandchildren.
Mort was preceded in death by his parents; his dear sister, Ethel (Meyer Weissman); and his beloved brothers Arthur (Hanorah Wienstock) and Joseph (Sally Cole). Mort was born in Chicago, and was a remarkable athlete at Austin High School, where his talent earned him a scholarship to play college basketball. Sadly, the Korean war intervened, and Mort traded basketball shoes for army boots. After an honorable discharge, he returned home to Chicago and married his high school sweetheart, Dottie on July 22, 1956. Mort enjoyed a successful career as comptroller for Market Builder Incentives that spanned 3 decades, but his passions were always family and sports.
His knowledge of the games, his sense of fair play, and his sense of humor made him an exemplary coach and mentor. Mort enjoyed coaching and teaching, and was instrumental in developing a training program for young umpires. This ultimately launched a second career, officiating baseball and basketball games at the high school, college, and semi-pro levels. Until recently, Mort and Dot enjoyed winters at their home in Arizona, and Mort enjoyed playing golf well into his 80's. Mort is remembered as a loving husband, father, grandfather, and friend. Mort loved his family, loved to laugh, loved good food, and loved a good game. He was a fierce competitor, but win or lose, his charter was simple: "Do your best".
