

Neil Common was born in Tchula, Mississippi in 1940. He passed away peacefully at the age of 85, with family by his side. He was one of twelve siblings. Neil moved to Chicago when he was fifteen, and remained there throughout his life. He lived a full life as a loving and devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, cousin and friend.
Throughout his whole life, he had a spirit of loving kindness. He always went out of his way to make sure his family and friends were comfortable and happy, whether with a plate of food or a piece of guidance. He was always generous with his time serving as mentor throughout his career as a food service director. Neil’s advice was sought by many and his calm presence was a source of comfort to all who knew him. As a member of his synagogue’s Social Justice Committee he packaged and delivered food to organizations that served people in need.
What Neil enjoyed most was spending time with family. He loved hosting family reunions and cooking for his family and friends. Neil’s favorite pastimes were collecting and listening to various genres of music, as well as taking extended walks with his wife, Carol. Neil’s legacy is one of resilience while facing life’s challenges. He was a man of integrity and enduring love. He will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.
