Peter Mayer, a longtime resident of the North Shore passed away on June 28, 2024 at the age of 66. He was born in Chicago, Illinois and grew up in Highland Park with his beloved sister Lisa. His father, Richard Mayer, was in the toy business and can trace his family’s residency in Chicago back to 1851. His mother, Ida Mayer, was an avid news junkie who instilled a love for current events and lively dinner table conversation in her children. He attended Highland Park High School where he ran cross-country and graduated from the University of Michigan in 1980. Like his mother who also went to Michigan, Pete enthusiastically followed UM football and watched the team play in Evanston whenever they squared off against Northwestern (Go Blue!). Pete married the love of his life Mary Louise Wall. They had two daughters, Maddy and Margot. Maddy currently lives in Chicago and Margot lives in New York City. For many years Mr. Mayer worked in the financial industry as a trader. His acronym “NEO” honored the dance club in Lincoln Park that he enjoyed. He was blessed with many friends in the community, several of whom he’d known for more than 50 years. His popularity was one of the reasons his family had to get a second phone number when he was growing up.
His wife Mary added, “Pete Mayer had boundless energy and a zest for living. He was engaging and our foundation for common sense. While we will sadly miss him, we are grateful for a life well led.” Surviving is wife Mary of Lake Bluff, Illinois and his daughters, Maddy of Chicago and Margot of New York City, and his sister, Lisa of Chicago. A memorial service will be held July 11, at 10:30 at Weinstein & Piser Funeral Home, 111 Skokie Blvd, Wilmette.
