Phil was born in Chicago to Lewis B. and Sadie Lewin. He graduated as a salutatorian at Sullivan High School where he was selected for the National Honor Society for all four years. After graduating from Northwestern University with a degree in finance, he joined Continental Bank and spent parts of the next seven decades in commercial banking. Renowned in the banking community, Phil was President of Drovers National Bank and Exchange National Bank and later did stints at LaSalle National Bank, Bank of America and The Private Bank. Phil “wrote the book” on asset-based lending and was known to colleagues and customers alike as a keen intellect.
A voracious reader up until his passing, he had an affinity for science and history. With a desire to make a difference, he was a National Delegate for The American Cancer Society and energized the cause in its search for the cure. He enjoyed riding his bike on Saturdays with his brother Eddie and playing golf on Sundays with his brother Mitchell (years later joined by his son and grandson).
Phil survived his beloved spouse Binnie who passed in January. Phil was a loving father to his children Stanton (Terri) Lewin and Stephanie (Roger Bonds) Conran. Additionally, he was a caring stepfather to Eve (Jeffrey) Ulin, Meg (Jeffrey) Leonard and Sara Jo Slate. He was a proud grandparent to Alexa (Kyle) Schwartz, Matthew (Dana) Lewin, Carly (John) Wanglin, MD and Tori Conran. He was also a fond step-grandpa to Charlie, Teddy, Emma, Zane, Lenin and Micah. As a great-grandfather he was overjoyed for Xander Cayde Schwartz, Zackery Philip Lewin, Brooke Emery Schwartz, and Leo Jude Wanglin.
Phil had a fun way about him with a wicked sense of humor and will be missed by his family and many friends. A funeral service will be held Thursday, June 26, 1:00 PM at Weinstein & Piser Funeral Home, 111 Skokie Blvd, Wilmette. Service will be livestreamed. Interment at Memorial Park Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to The American Cancer Society (www.cancer.org).
