Robert H. Kaul was born in Chicago on July 3, 1937. He attended Sullivan High School where he played baseball and earned his bachelor’s degree in business from Northwestern University. At Northwestern, he met the love of his live, Marjorie Silverman. They were married in 1962 in Fort Wayne, Indiana, Margie’s hometown. Bob joined the family business started by his grandfather and located in the Merchandise Mart and later the Apparel Center. Bob expanded and remade the company into a thriving small business representing boutique children’s clothing from around the world and became a local leader in his field.
Bob, always enormously intellectually curious, was once famously caught on camera reading Proust prior to the first inning at Wrigley. Bob pursued his multiple interests with passion collecting over 4000 books on a wide range of topics. He was always ready to discuss, but never to impose his views. Bob placed great value on friendship and kept in touch with “the old neighborhood” and his friends from Sullivan High and Northwestern. He was the go-to person for advice and counsel for friends and relatives in need of any kind of assistance. He loved and supported his friends and family and did not have an enemy in the world. In short, he was a mensch.
In addition to his wife Margie, Bob is survived by his three children Larry and his wife Kelli (Evanston IL), Dan and his wife Bridgette (Ann Arbor MI), and Melissa and her husband Mike (Denver CO) and 6 grandchildren.
