Sonya R. Abrahamson

Sonya R. Abrahamson nee Shapiro, passed away December 6, 2020. Beloved wife of the late Arthur Abrahamson; loving mother of Maura Ann Abrahamson, Paul Abrahamson, and Dawn Abrahamson (Monty) Allen; adored grandmother of Avi, Talya, and Hadas Cohen, Zachary Abrahamson, and Hannah and Jessica Allen; devoted sister of Rodney (Jackie) Shapiro. Sonya was preceded in death by her parents and her two brothers Dennis and Robert Shapiro.

Sonya was born in Dublin, Ireland and raised in Johannesburg, South Africa. She worked on a kibbutz in Israel and moved to the United States to work as a registered nurse in Chicago. She met Arthur and they married in 1958. Arthur and Sonya lived in Highland Park for 60 years and raised three children. She became an accomplished sculptor exhibiting her work in various art shows and private collections. She will be remembered for her beautiful smile, wonderful sense of humor and colorful stories. As the family matriarch, Sonya’s greatest joy was being able to bring her family and extended family together and spend time with them. Her family will treasure those times forever.

Due to current COVID-19 restrictions, a private graveside service and interment will be held at Memorial Park Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the World Wildlife Fund, www.worldwildlife.org.
