

Tom Luning of Evanston, passed away on July 24, 2024. He is survived by his wife of fifty-seven years, Betty Nash; sisters Teresa (Jerry) Lucas and Marnie (Charlie) Stalford; sons Paul (Angela) and Chad (Leslie); and grandchildren Claire, Duncan, Mae, and Jenet. He was preceded in death by his parents, Leo and Margaret Luning, and sisters Jean Luning and Mary Ann Leahy.
Born in St. Louis and raised in Morgan Park on the South Side of Chicago, Tom attended St. Ignatius High School, Xavier University, and Georgetown Law School, where he was the managing editor of the Georgetown Law Journal. After law school, he clerked for the Honorable Spotswood Robinson and the US Court of Appeals. He returned to Chicago in 1968 and joined the law firm Schiff Hardin, where he served as the firm’s first Managing Partner and subsequently as General Counsel. He continued to work for the firm until his retirement in 2022. During this time, Tom taught legal ethics at the University of Chicago Law School. He served as Co-Chair of the Illinois and Chicago Bar Associations Joint Committee on Ethics, and as Co-Chair of the Chicago Lawyers Committee for Civil Rights.
