Betty Woody passed away Friday, December 26, 2014. Betty was born April 15, 1949 in Lynchburg , Virginia to Rose Marie Rodgers Gallaher and James R Gallaher, their only child. Later Betty married Wayne F Woody of Lexington, Virginia. They had six children, Sandra, John, Wayne, Melissa, Anita, and Nathanael. Wayne and Betty started their journey together in Lexington, Virginia, but work moved them to Roanoke, Virginia, Coral Springs, Florida, then to Erie, Pennsylvania, followed by a brief three and a half years in Blue Grass, Iowa. Cold weather sent them packing to Wilmington, North Carolina for the last 20 years. During the early years of their marriage, Betty dedicated her life and symbolized this, by baptism as one of Jehovah's Witness, in 1973. She spent 42 years volunteering and ministering to those in need and teaching the Bible. Betty was a devoted daughter, wife, mother, and grandmother. When the children were older, Betty began working secularly. She enjoyed working on the Magestic Manor Dairy Farm in Iowa, feeding, milking, and taking care of the dairy cows. Later, after moving to Wilmington, Betty worked in the retail furniture industry, as a salesperson, and in the office.
Betty was very creative and talented, she could do anything she put her hands and mind to. She painted, sketched, made jewelry, purses, sewed, and no "bling" was too much for Betty. She was also an avid gardener, and this showed in her beautiful yard. She enjoyed making floral arrangements, and decorating her home in her unique way. She was a wonderful cook, always enjoyed trying new recipes. Betty was known for her hospitality, she enjoyed having family and friends to her home for meals, lively conversation, games, and fun.
Betty is survived by her Mother, husband, all of her children and grandchildren, as well as so many close personal friends that she considered members of her family.
There will be a gathering of family and friends, Tuesday, December 30th, from 6-8 pm at Coble Ward-Smith Funeral Home 3915 Oleander Drive, Wilmington. A memorial service will be held Saturday, January 3rd at 2 pm, at the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses, 4806 Gordon road, Wilmington.
