In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his brother Ricky Chambers and his sister Veronica Jones.
Clegie attended Jacksboro High School and Southwestern Illinois College, where he obtained his Associates in Nursing. He also served in the Air Force for 23 years.
Clegie loved reading, studying the word of God, and playing with his grandchildren. He was also a dedicated member of Lake Forest Baptist Church, where he and Bill Penny founded the Clothes Closet in 2015. The Clothes Closet was an idea many people within the church shared and wanted to bring to life, but Clegie and Bill were the first to actually make it happen. The Clothes Closet was created to accept clothing donations so that homeless or needy people could obtain clothes free of charge. The first year it was operational, there were over 1000 individuals who visited the Clothes Closet. Clegie was very proud of the work he and Bill accomplished with the Clothes Closet and also loved to share the gospel to those who visited.
