

Dr. Wayne Varner passed away in Wilmington, North Carolina on August 19th after a month-long hospitalization due to a heart condition.
He is survived by his beloved wife Becky; their children Wes, Ken, and Catherine; and grandchildren Wylder, Talan, Max, James, William, and Elizabeth. He was a devoted husband of 56 years and proud father. Papa Wayne often made piñatas for the grandchildren's birthday parties and taught them how to fly model planes. He was also a cherished friend and wise counselor to many near and far and will be remembered for his profound faith, humble presence, brilliant intellect, and kind smile.
Born in Spartanburg, South Carolina, Wayne was the son of Walter and Ola. He pursued his calling through both ministry and medicine, attending Garrett-Evangelical Theological Seminary in Evanston, Illinois, followed by medical school at the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston.
From 1984 to 2000, he served as a pathologist at Cape Fear Hospital and then at New Hanover Regional Medical Centre. He also held the role of president of the New Hanover County Medical Society. From 2000 to 2006, he continued his medical leadership and service as the Medical Director for Pathology at the Alaska Native Medical Center in Anchorage, Alaska.
Wayne was a member of Wesley Memorial United Methodist Church, where he sang in the choir and often taught the Seeker’s Class Sunday school. In retirement, he found joy and comradery flying model airplanes with the Cape Fear Flyers.
A funeral service will be held at Wesley Memorial United Methodist Church in Wilmington, North Carolina on Monday, August 25th at 11:00 a.m. in the sanctuary, with a reception to follow.
