Eileen was born on July 31, 1953, in Los Angeles, CA. She spent most of her adult life working in Human Resources with numerous companies in California. She was married once in her early adult years for only a few years and remained single until she married Billy R. Bumby in October of 2011. Bill and Eileen divorced in August of 2021, only to be remarried in February of 2024. Even though they were divorced, they lived together from August of 2021 until they were remarried in February of 2024.
Eileen’s parents, John Calvin Walter (father) and Lucille Mae Anderson (mother), preceded her in death.
Eileen is survived by members of her family: one daughter, Melissa Ason and husband Christopher, two grandchildren, Mathew and Amelia, and two sisters, Rhonda McIntosh and family, and Linda Cockerell and family.
Eileen is also survived by her husband's family: Michelle and husband Paul; granddaughter Danielle and husband Matthew; grandchildren Christopher, Brooke, Chloe, and great-grandchildren Chris and Emily.
Eileen was always a very kind and loving person and loved her work. She always made great friends with her coworkers. She loved going to estate sales and rummaging through items for sale, never knowing what might catch her eye. She moved around a lot because of her husband's job, but she enjoyed the changes in her life, since she had always stayed close to home before they were married, and the only time she traveled was with her family.
Eileen was a Dodgers fan, and her husband was a Giants fan, so there was a little friendly rivalry.
Eileen loved putting together puzzles, and she was very good at it. She would pick out some of the hardest puzzles you could find to put together. When Ellen and her husband sold their home in Highland, CA, and moved into their fifth wheel, Eileen must have had two to three hundred puzzles. It seemed like every week or so, she would go shopping and find another puzzle that she had not done.
Eileen and her husband lived in their fifth wheel from July of 2019 until December of 2023, when they moved to North Carolina to live in the home they bought in 2018.
Eileen loved to go on her daily walks around the neighborhood and made numerous friends that she would stop and visit with. She would walk at least a half mile on a single trip and would walk at least two to four times a day.
For those that don't know, Eileen suffered from Alzheimer's disease/dementia, which started worsening in November of 2025, and she had to be placed in a memory care facility because of her need for 24-hour-a-day assistance. She was doing well until May of 2026, when her condition declined rapidly, which eventually led to her passing.
Eileen loved her daughter, grandchildren and great-grandchildren, but because of the distance apart, she could not enjoy them the way she would have liked to.
To all of Eileen's schoolmates, coworkers, and longtime friends, Eileen always cherished your friendship and the ties you all shared over the years. Every time she would see you or talk to you, her eyes would light up, and you could tell how special a bond she had with all of you. Please know that even though Eileen is gone, you will always be a part of her for eternity.
Join me for Eileen's Celebration of Life burial ceremony on June 21, 2026, at 2:00 p.m. at Greenlawn Cemetery, located in Wilmington, NC. A formal notice will be issued that will include all the details.
In closing, as her husband for over 14 years, I was so lucky to find such an incredible person to share my life with. When my time comes, I will be laid to rest next to Eileen so we can continue our journey through eternity.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made in Eileen's memory to the Alzheimer's Association, North Carolina Chapter. Your support will help advance research, care, and resources for individuals and families affected by Alzheimer's disease. Donations may be made at https://www.alz.org/nc.
