

FLAG John Carson Mercer, 76, also known as JC and Buster, beloved husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather and friend, went to be with the Lord on February 11, 2010. John was preceded in death by his parents, Sessie Lee Blackman Mercer Shaw and Wilton Rudolph Shaw, Carson Mercer and his beloved wife Jeanette Joy Mercer. John served in the US Navy from 1951-1955. He was stationed in Yokuska, Japan during the Japanese Occupation. He then transferred to the Marshal Islands in Quadulin for support in the H. Bomb test in 1954. He was then transferred to the oil tanker, the U.S.S. Mattaponi and transferred to Hawaii for temporary duty until his discharge in 1955. He was retired from Allstate Insurance Agency after 33 years. He continued as an active member of the Allstate General Agents Alumni Group AKA ""Over The Hill Gang"". During that time John and Mike Merritt founded Atlantic Marine in the early 1970's. He was a lifetime member of the American Legion. John is survived by his children, Wanda Denise Richardson and her husband Lee, Charlotte, NC, Carson Wilton ""Buddy"" Mercer and his wife Katy, Wilmington, NC, Wesley Alan Mercer and his wife Vickie, Shallotte, NC, Johnny Lynn Mercer and his wife Pamela, Wilmington, NC, Jeffrey Eugene Mercer and his wife Susan, Wilmington, NC, Tammy Lynn Mercer Rivenbark and her husband Clay, Currie, NC, Telina Louise ""Tina"" Mercer Parrish, Wilmington, NC and Jeanine Leigh Mercer and her husband Victor Treto, Sr, Rocky Point, NC. John is also survived by 15 grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren. Dad was a man of honor and integrity who enjoyed life, had a love of fishing and boating, and most of all, love for his family. Memories will be cherished and he will be deeply missed. The family will receive friends from 6-8 PM Sunday at Andrews Mortuary Valley Chapel. Funeral services will be held at 2 PM Monday at Freedom Baptist Church, 802 N. College Road, Wilmington, NC. Entombment will follow at Oleander Memorial Gardens. Following the service, the family will be receiving friends at the home of Buddy and Katie Mercer, 312 Shackleford Dr, Wilmington, NC. Pallbearers will be Carson Mercer, Justin Mercer, Jamie Mercer, Jeremy Carroll, Jason Carroll, Jordan Carroll and Victor Treto, Jr. Honorary bearers will Austin Tharrington and Noah Mercer. The Mercer family would like to express their deep appreciation for the help and care extended for John C. Mercer during his lengthy illness. They would like to extend a special thank you to Dr. B.
