On Saturday, November 26, 2022, Leo James “Jim” Doyle, of Wilmington, NC, passed away following a bravely fought battle with lung cancer at the age of 76. He was preceded in death by his loving wife of 43 years, Paula Ann Corrigan Doyle, and survived by his children: daughter Caitlin E. Doyle (of San Francisco, CA), and son Andrew J. Doyle and his partner Leslie A. Chapman (of Philadelphia, PA), as well as numerous grand-cats and a grand-dog.
Born on October 10, 1946, Jim grew up in the Mattapan section of Boston. He attended Boston Technical High School, before pursuing an undergraduate degree from Northeastern University, and multiple Master's degrees from Western New England University. On March 22, 1975, Paula and Jim were married. Originally living in Belmont, they eventually settled in Acton, MA where they raised their children. Jim made his career as a systems analyst.
As a young man, Jim worked in concessions at Fenway Park, where he became a passionate Boston sports fan (especially the Red Sox and Patriots) whom he rooted for right up until the end. He was also a supporter of his children’s alma maters the Syracuse Orange (Caitlin) and the Pitt Panthers (Andrew).
In retirement, Paula and Jim settled at Compass Pointe in Leland, NC, and after Paula’s passing, he moved to Plantation Village in Wilmington, NC, making many new friends in both communities. Together they enjoyed traveling extensively throughout Europe and the United States and exploring their new surroundings. Jim loved a cold beer, greasy pizza (with anchovies), black jellybeans, golden oldies, and soaking up the sun. His famous eggnog recipe will live on but will remain a closely guarded family secret.
Jim will be greatly missed by friends and family from Massachusetts to the Carolinas, and beyond. A Celebration of Life will be held at 2:00 pm, Thursday, January 5, 2023, at Andrews Mortuary Market Street Chapel, located at 1617 Market Street, Wilmington, NC 28401 (910-762-7788). A visitation will be held one hour prior to the service time.
In lieu of flowers, please make a donation in Jim’s name to Upstage Lung Cancer (upstagelungcancer.org), a Massachusetts based charity dedicated to early lung cancer detection, and please, please get yourself screened.
