

Margie Vander Schalie Hanzal, aged 94, of Raleigh, North Carolina, passed away on September 13, 2025. Born on July 27, 1931, in Paterson, New Jersey, she was the daughter of Herman Vander Schalie and Marie Johanna Braak Vander Schalie.
Along with her parents, Margie was preceded in death by her husband, James John Hanzal, and her daughter, Patricia Buehler, along with her son-in-law, Carl Buehler.
Throughout her life, Margie enjoyed a variety of hobbies, including art, reading, and watching television. She was an active member of the Girl Scouts from 1946 to 1953, serving as a summer counselor in 1952. A proud graduate of the Women’s College of Greensboro, she earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology. Margie later worked at Cold Spring Harbor in Long Island, New York, before obtaining her Master’s Degree in Zoology from The University of Southern California. She then dedicated her career to teaching in various schools across California. Eventually, Margie taught at Cape Fear Tech in Wilmington, North Carolina. She became certified in Accounting and worked for a CPA also in Wilmington, North Carolina. Following the death of her husband in 1993 she retired and moved to Raleigh, North Carolina.
Margie is survived by her children: Janice Jones of Willard, North Carolina; John Hanzal of Colorado; and Phyllis Blenkhorn, along with her husband Kirke, of Raleigh, North Carolina. Her legacy continues through her grandchildren: Edward Jones, Courtney Ashline and her husband Greg, Carl J. Buehler, Drake Buehler, Eric Blenkhorn, and Jennifer Blenkhorn. Margie was also blessed with two great-grandchildren: Logan and Remy.
A Graveside Inurnment Service with family and friends paying last respects will be held on Monday, September 22, 2025, at 12 o'clock noon at Greenlawn Memorial Park: 1311 Shipyard Blvd, Wilmington, North Carolina 28412.
