Mike Underwood

Michael Lee Underwood (Mike), 51, of Wilmington N.C., formerly of Greensboro, N.C., died Wednesday, March 20th, 2013 at Cape Carteret General Hospital. A lifelong gymnast, he was the head coach at Cedar Point Gymnastics. In fact, Mike had been in gymnastics over 30 years. He had a passion for it, and that showed in the close relationships he had with all of his team girls. Mike was born in Springfield, IL, on September 4th, 1964. He was the son of the late Oscar Underwood and Judy Underwood. He was predeceased by his grandparents William Tippett, Durema McClellan, Alton and Elvira Underwood. He is survived by his daughter Shay Underwood Piver and her husband James Piver, his granddaughter Lexy Piver, his sister Sonja Underwood Powell and her husband Larry Powell, his mother Judy Underwood, and his nephew Chris Brown and his partner Brandon Woodard and niece Jennifer Lieseke and husband TJ Lieseke. A visitation and memorial service will be held from 6:30-8:30, Monday, March 25, 2013, at Andrews Mortuary Valley Chapel on South College Rd. Everyone is welcomed to attend. In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund has been set up in Mike's honor. Donations can be made at any First Citizens Bank. The Mike Underwood Memorial fund will benefit the NC Chapter of USA Gymnastics, and will help gymnasts across the state.
