Myrtle Payne Washburn

Myrtle was preceded in death by her husband Charlie C. Washburn; parents, Billie and Lillie Ore Payne; brothers, W.T. “Buster” Payne and John W. Payne; sisters, Annie L. Shelton, Mabel P. Shelton, and Gwendolyn Payne.

She is survived by sister Janie P. Gentry; Daughters, Charlene W. McFayden and husband, Dennis of Wilmington and Shelby F. Taylor of Arizona; grandchildren, Deanna M. Steffensen and husband Lee, Susan Rosas-Moreno and husband Jesus, George Taylor, Jr., Jeff Taylor and wife Debi, Sonya Garvey and husband Marvin; along with her extended family of great-grandchildren.

Visitation for family and friends will start at 11:30am with service to follow afterwards at 1:00pm, Friday, March 11, 2016. Visitation and Funeral Services will be conducted at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints on College Road, Wilmington, NC. Interment will follow at Oleander Memorial Gardens.

Myrtle was born January 7, 1920 in Rockingham County, moving to Wilmington in the early 1950’s. She retired from Belk after 23 years of service. Myrtle is a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints and has always cherished her Faith and her Family. She was a very spiritual person and would always tell you to pray if you ever had a problem or something troubling you. She always tried to find and see the good in everyone, as she tried to be a positive person and live by the teachings of the gospel. Myrtle would always put the needs of others ahead of herself, as it was very important to her, to help others in need. She touched the lives of so many, as she was a very loving and compassionate person. She had a smile and glimmer in her eye that would always light up a room. Myrtle loved to complete genealogy work and was an avid reader. She also loved flowers, gardening, cooking, and volunteering at the Elementary School. She was the center of her family and will be dearly missed. There could never be another sister, wife, mother, or grandmother that cared for her family as much as we felt that she cared for ours.

Flowers are welcomed or memorial gifts may be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, as this was a charity that was always dear to her.
