Peggy resided most of her life in Wilmington, NC, except for a 5 year period in Currie, NC. She graduated from New Hanover High School in 1949, and she worked in sales for Life of Virginia and then Shoe Shak. She finally retired at the age of 70.
Thirty-six descendants will mourn Peggy’s death. She had 5 children, Diane M. Latham of Currie, NC; Anthony Wayne Mintz of Lexington, SC; Gloria M. Mintz of Wilmington, NC; Audrey M. Williamson of Leland, NC; and Wilbur Roland Mintz, Jr. of West Lexington, SC. She is also survived by 10 grandchildren, 18 great grandchildren, and 3 great-great grandchildren.
The overarching legacy of Peggy’s life was the love and devotion she showed to her entire family. Widowed at the age of 34, she raised her 5 children alone, often in very hard times. Although she struggled to provide for us, she always had delicious food on the table, love in her heart, and a switch within easy reach for swift discipline. Her grandchildren, great grandchildren, and great great grandchildren were her delight. She would allow herself to be painted up with lipstick and rouge and her hair wound all askew whenever they wanted to play with her. She would wrestle on the floor and dance to the Beetles. She might even jitterbug, if given the opportunity. Johnny Cash was her favorite singer, and during her final days, it was he that she preferred to lull her to sleep.
Coming from a large family, Peggy had 3 surviving sisters whom she adored…Joyce Freeman of Southport, NC; Glenda Bell, and Sara Smith, both of Wilmington, NC. She also loved her sister-in-law, Marian Clewis of Wilmington. Lots of laughter and high jinks always occurred when this bunch met…usually over food.
Peggy suffered for about 7 years with Alzheimers, and she spent 2 ½ years at Trinity Grove located in Monkey Junction. The wonderful nurses and staff at Trinity Grove provided our mother with professional care and showed our family lots of patience and kindness as we tried to help our mother. Thank you!!
On Thursday, May 27, Peggy was transported to Emily Matthews’ home for personal private care. Emily is Peggy’s granddaughter and an RN, and she desperately wanted to care for her grandmother through the end of her life. She provided the loving attention and the professional care that Peggy needed. The last thing Emily fed Peggy was ice cream…her absolute favorite food in the world. Our family owes Emily a debt of gratitude for her loving attention as our mother slipped away peacefully and pain-free in her home.
Our sweet Mama, the matriarch of our family, left a large legacy of love. It is our responsibility to carry that legacy forward into the future generations. She will be interred at Coble Funeral and Cremation Service at Greenlawn Memorial Park in Wilmington, NC next to the husband she loved so much on June 6, 2021. Visitation is at 12:00 noon, and the service is at 2:00. After the Service, The family is invited for food and fellowship at 806 Spring Valley Rd, Wilmington, NC.
