Terrence Patrick McCoy was born July 1, 1955, in Bessemer, AL, and grew up in Miami, FL. His service in the United States Air Force eventually brought him to Wilmington, a place he would proudly call his forever earthly home. It was there that he met the love of his life, Theresa Labriola McCoy, with whom he built a life centered on faith, family and love.
Known most frequently and affectionately as “Mac,” he had a wonderfully punny sense of humor and brought laughter and light to those around him. No matter what name he was called (Mac, Terry, Pat, Dad, Pops, Granddaddy), everyone knew him as an easygoing, intelligent, musically inclined leader, encourager and car/aviation enthusiast. Many considered him to be a father figure, a testament to his kindness, wisdom and caring heart.
Mac was part owner of Marpac Corporation, where he built a successful career through hard work and dedication. He and his wife Theresa purchased Cox Christian Bookstore, which they viewed as their mission field in the Wilmington area. In his later years, Mac continued sharing his voice and faith with the community through his work at Hope Radio, where he was a beloved presence on “Hope in the Morning with Kevin and Mac” and known to many as “Macademous.”
An ordained minister and a devoted music minister, Mac had a deep love for music, teaching himself to play multiple instruments and sharing his gift through song and worship. He was a man of strong and unwavering faith, which guided every aspect of his life. He led his family with love and devotion, always striving to keep them rooted in Christ’s plan for their lives.
He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Theresa L. McCoy; his parents, Harry D. McCoy and Mildred Gilmore; and his brother, Timothy McCoy.
Mac is survived by his children, Tera (Eric) Ragan of Wilmington, Jeffery (Tracy) Mozingo of Fayetteville, and Shawn (Mikki) McCoy of Alabama; grandchildren Kayla (Jason) Black of Wilmington, Joshua Mozingo of Fayetteville, Addison and Adelyn Ragan of Wilmington, and Tera and Alexander McCoy of Alabama; and great-grandchildren, Judah and Olivia Black of Wilmington.
He is also survived by his brothers Michael (Rowena) McCoy of Florida and Sean (Judith) McCoy of Florida.
Mac’s legacy of faith, music, love and laughter will live on through all who knew him. He will be deeply missed and forever cherished. Mac never said “Goodbye” at the end of a phone conversation – he had another phrase that signaled a temporary parting rather than a final farewell. His family and friends cling to this reminder and are simply saying, “Bye for now.”
