Toby was born on January 1, 1930, in Brooklyn, NY, and lived a life filled with love and laughter with his family. He was preceded in death by his wife of 64 years, Eileen S. Hansen.
Toby is survived by his daughters, Barbara Hansen and Lori Nolan, as well as his son-in-love, Jim Nolan. He was a proud “Pop-Pop” to Michael Nolan (Cristin) and Katie Nolan Saas (Matt) and a delighted great-“Pop-Pop” to Landon and Callie Nolan and Madison Saas. He took great joy in the accomplishments of his grandchildren and cherished every moment spent with his great-grandchildren, who brought laughter and light into his life.
Toby proudly served his country and traveled the world in the Navy Military Sea Transport Service. His time in the Navy ignited a lifelong passion for sailing, which became a significant part of his identity. When he was not on the water or building his beloved sailboat, Toby dedicated 32 years to his role as the superintendent of maintenance at Westchester County Medical Center. After retiring, he and Eileen relocated to Otis, Massachusetts, before eventually moving to Wilmington, NC, in 2015 to be closer to family.
Toby’s warmth, humor, and unwavering support will be deeply missed. His legacy of love and dedication to family will continue to inspire those he leaves behind. In this time of grief, we celebrate a life well-lived, a father, grandfather, and great-grandfather whose love knew no bounds.
The family would like to express their deepest gratitude to Alexis McCoy, for her compassion and care, of both Toby and Eileen; as well as, her support of the entire family. You have been a true blessing to each of us.
A memorial service to honor both Toby's and Eileen’s life will be held on Saturday, September 28th from 3-5pm at Coble Funeral and Cremation Service at Greenlawn Memorial Park, 1155 Shipyard Blvd, Wilmington, NC 28412.
The family asks that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to Lower Cape Fear Hospice in memory of Toby and Eileen Hansen, who both received outstanding end of life care from the home hospice staff.
