Charles David Byrd

Charles “Charlie” David Byrd, age 79, of Fremont, NC, went to be with his Heavenly Father on September 24, 2025, surrounded by his family. Born on May 24, 1946, in Durham, NC, he was a loving husband to Sylvia “Faye” Byrd and a dedicated father to Brian and Cheri.

Charlie was many things to many people: son, brother, husband, dad, papa, uncle, military veteran, and friend. He had a heart of gold, and faithfully provided for the love of his life, Faye, and for his family. He loved the Lord with unwavering commitment and served Him and others with humility. Though Charlie was never one to seek attention, those who knew him received it freely. He left a lasting impact on others with his smile, kind eyes, gentleness, sense of humor, and laughter.

Charlie loved his country and proudly served in the United States Navy for 30 years (1964-1994), achieving the rank of Master Chief.

He is survived by his beloved wife, Faye; his son Brian Byrd and wife Dolly of Canton, NC; daughter Cheri Byrd Echevarria and husband Steve of Edwardsville, IL; his grandchildren Ellery Byrd of Canton, NC, Evan Byrd of Canton, NC, Megan Echevarria of Portland, OR, and Seth Echevarria of Edwardsville, IL; his sister Jean Byrd Lee of Clayton, NC; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins. He was preceded in death by his oldest sister, Belle Byrd Allen, who went to be with the Lord in 2023, and who will be reunited with her brother once again.

A service to honor Charlie will be held on Monday October 6, 2025, at 12pm at Eastern Carolina State Veterans Cemetery, 164 Longs Plant Farm Road, Goldsboro, NC 27534. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to the SECU Family House at UNC Hospitals or Johnston Health Foundation (Hospice Fund).
