Born on May 21, 1940, in Atlanta, Georgia, Dixie was the daughter of the late Grady and Flora Bell Oglesby. One of eight children, she was deeply connected to her siblings and family throughout her life. She was preceded in death by her sisters Beverly Marie Oglesby Bowen, Alice Olivia “Jettie” Oglesby Gordon and Barbara “Joann” Oglesby Carmichael, her brother Ray Allen Oglesby, and her beloved son, Cecil Emmett Mitchell. Dixie carried her memories of growing up with her large, loving family like treasures—always eager to share those stories with anyone willing to listen.
In 2004, Dixie moved from Griffin, Georgia to Winder with her sisters Roxie and Joann, to be closer to family—a decision that brought her great joy in her later years. Dedicated and hardworking, she spent over two decades as a bookkeeper for PhilMart Transportation, continuing to work well into her 80s before retiring at the age of 84.
Dixie’s life was rooted in love—for God, for her family, and for others. She is survived by her siblings Philip Oglesby, Roxie Oglesby Dunn, and Marvene Oglesby Schrapper; her son and daughter-in-love, Robert Kelly and Leanne Jones; and her cherished grandchildren, Jordan Jones and Tyler Grover, Tyler Jones and Emily Hansen. She also leaves behind her bonus daughters and their spouses, Toni and Harold Fields, and Terri and Barry Powell, along with a large family of nieces, nephews, other extended family, and dear friends who were truly part of her heart.
Dixie’s love, kindness, and storytelling will be deeply missed by all who knew her. Her warmth and gentle presence touched so many lives.
A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date, where family and friends will gather to remember the beautiful life she lived and the eternal life she now rejoices in.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made in Dixie’s name and memory to Hospice of Northeast Georgia Health System: https://www.nghs.com/foundation/hospice.
