Henry Berry Mays

Henry Berry Mays, age 85 of Winder, passed away on January 19, 2024. Henry was born in Atlanta and lived the past 45 years in Winder. He earned a Bachelor of Business Administration Degree from Georgia State University. He served his country in the Army Reserves. Henry was retired from a 20 year career as Vice President and Loan Officer at The Peoples Bank of Winder. He also worked for other Winder area banks including First Piedmont, Main Street, and Regions Banks. He was an active member of Winder First United Methodist Church where he was part of the Spares & Pairs Sunday School Class. He served as Treasurer of multiple organizations in the Winder area including: the Winder FUMC Mens Club, Pineshore Pool Club, the Claude Tuck Memorial Fund, and the Friends of Fort Yargo. He was a 50 year member of the Lions Club and served 3 different terms as President and was their Treasurer for many of those years. Henry was a dedicated volunteer with the Barrow County Schools mentoring program. He served as a Boy Scout Leader and volunteered for over 20 years with Meals on Wheels.

Henry was predeceased by his parents, Lois and Henry Bean Mays, Jr., and his brother, Robert Mays. He is survived by his loving wife of 54 years, Ann Wormick Mays. He is also survived by his children: Larry (Ansley) Mays of Statesboro, and Barbara (Ben) Appling of Dacula; four grandchildren: Caroline Appling, Andrew Appling, Reagan Mays, and Riley Mays; sister, Martha Kennedy of Winston-Salem, NC; and nieces and nephews: Brian Kennedy, Katherine Kennedy, and Rick Stoker.

A visitation for family and friends will be held at Smith Funeral Home, 755 Atlanta Hwy SE, Winder, GA on Tuesday, January 23 from 4:30 pm until 7:00 pm. A Memorial Service will be held on Wednesday, January 24 at 3:00 pm at Winder First United Methodist Church, 280 N. Broad Street, Winder, GA, with Rev. Dwight Oakes officiating. In lieu of flowers, the family has requested donations in memory of Henry Mays be made to Winder First United Methodist Church or the Winder Lions Club.
