John Marion Gladney, of Winder, GA, passed away on April 8, 2024. John was the son of John and Ethel Gladney and he was born in Fitzgerald, GA, July 17, 1939. He was predeceased by his 2 sisters, Juanita and Shirley. He attended school in Tifton, GA, attended ABAC and Georgia Tech, graduated from the University of Georgia in 1962 with a degree in Botany. After graduation, he joined the Navy and served in Vietnam and the Philippines. He and his wife, Marilyn, were married in 1966 in Atlanta. He retired from Hoechst-Celanese Textile Co. after 29 years working as a Chemical Engineer and Purchasing Agent in South Carolina and Virginia. He taught 5th grade boys Sunday School and served as a deacon in several Baptist churches, the last being First Baptist in Winder, GA. He was a Master Gardener for many years and enjoyed sharing plants that he had cross-bred.
He is survived by his wife, Marilyn; a son, David Phillip (Jainara) Gladney, Sr.; a daughter, Dianna Leigh Gladney; and 3 grandsons: David Phillip Gladney, Jr., Luke Gladney, and Nicholas Gladney.
A visitation for family and friends will be held on Saturday, April 13 from noon until 2:00 pm at Smith Funeral Home, 755 Atlanta Hwy SE, Winder, GA. The Funeral Service will follow at 2:00 pm in Smith Memory Chapel with Rev. Chad Mantooth officiating. Burial will be held at Oak Ridge Cemetery in Tifton, GA on Monday, April 15, 2024 at 11:00AM. Memorials may be made to Greater Vision of First Baptist Church, Winder, GA.
